I have not changed anything and the tank has been cloudy all day and not getting better, anyone have any ideas.....
I have tested all the basic's (salinity.23, nitrite's 0, nitrate's just under 20, amonia 0, High Range PH 8.2) all are withing godd range I dont understand what is going on.
Any help is appriciated.
Thank you, Rich-

Possibly a bacterial bloom? Throw some carbon in and run it for a day or so and see if that helps. Also, try and run your skimmer a little more wet if you can to try and help a bit.

Thanks Todd I will try that I think I am going to keep the lights off for a day also, the tank is still cycling and I have a lot of rust colored algea on my nice white sand bed.

So you have no corals or anything in the tank other than live rock and sand?

If so, don't sweat the cloudy water. A bacterial bloom would most likely not cause any harm to corals or fish either, but I like to cure it as quickly as possible when they occur in my tank the 2 times it has. I think you are just experiencing normal cycle issues and nothing to worry about.

If worse come to worse you can always use a flux capacitor to help clear it up. Ask Marty McFly bcuz I think he still might have his. Good Luck!

I do have about 6 SPS frags and various softies (mushrooms, zenia, GSP, and just added some hammer. I am adding Purple up and now that I think about it I may have over done it. I was adding Kalkawasser but I ran out and I need to get some more because my cacium has dropped to 360.

Stingray, your not allowed to talk if you have fresh water only. learn how to get your bathwater right first before you try aquariums :) lolololol

Todd,

I did what you said with the skimmers (yes I am running 2 of them:) and the tank was nice and clear when I woke up this morning. I am going to keep the lights off for today to try and fight off some of this rust colored algea on my sand bed.

Thank you!!

While it is cycling you want to test ammonia and nitrites and see when it hit's the highest point for ammonia. After that, the ammonia will be converted into Nitrites and from there to Nitrates. Once there is no longer any detectable ammonia and nitrites, the cycle has completed. You will then want to do semi large to large water changes to remove the nitrates.

I am a bit surprised you have corals in there with the tank still possibly going through a cycle. Just check the levels and be ready for water changes is the best you can do. Don't use hemicals to fight the stuff. It can cause worse problems. Let the tank do what it is going to do naturally.

By testing your water for ammonia, nitrate and nitrate. You should see a spike in each area as bacteria grows to convert each chemical. Some systems have spikes larger than others, depending on the amount of live rock added, live sand, etc etc. If you add enough good quality live rock you may not even see a spike. Your test shows nitrates...which leads me to believe your tank has cycled. Maybe you added too much kalk, which caused the cloudy water?

edit:Todd and I were posting at the same time :)

I am thinking I did add too much Purple up and yes as of this week my nitrites an amonia are undetecable and my nitrates are dropping. I had bio balls in the filter and took those out last week since then the nitrates have dropped. when I set this up 2-3 months ago all the sand I put in there was ARGA-LIVE and I know people say thats a waste of money but I never had any major spikes and never lost any corals yet (knock on wood).
Well form what you and PK have said I think I will be doing a pretty large water change this weekend.

Thank you guys again!!!

I am not really that familiar with the purple up   yet, but I would stay clear of that stuff (althouh I did just buy some to see what its all about). Stick with a ballanced additive like Kalk, or the two parters like Marilyn has suggested.
Be sure to test for both Calcium and alkilinity.

Rod,
I am coming to see you this weekend with Garrick for Kalk, then next time I am going to try to work on the two part.
Thanks everyone again!!!
