This coral started growing from nothing over the last two years.
I've tried to positively identify it.
Any ideas?

Hey Chad. Not like any monti I've ever seen. I've never seen a coral like this anywhere. I've search all over the net. It's real thin and breaks easily. I tried to frag it once with no luck. It's almost like coraline on steroids, or coraline gone wild. I plan on coming over on Sat to get that mandarin if you still got it. I'll bring a piece then you can give me your professional opinion!

Mine looks like a monti cap...even has a lighter ring around the edges....but I don't think it is?????

Sorry, don't mean to highjack the thread!

there is a type of corraline that plates like this. i cant for the life of me remember where i read about it. i'll try to do some searching.

It starts with a P.. something like pedina or some such... could it be a variation of the red variety that I have in my tank?

Mine is growing on a piece of Tonga, is Red with a light orangish ring around the edge.

Check out Melev's website, melevsreef.com I believe, great search stuff and I believe you might get a hit.

It is about softball size. Mostly purple with light purple ring on the outside. Thanks zt44a I'll check out that website.

I checked in my Reef Coral book by Paul Humann. Closest thing I see is the Red algae. From the book; "There are a number of species in several genera that generally form thin, brittle, highly calcified encrustations and rounded plates. Occasionally their outer edges extend outward from substrate. They are usually dark red to burgandy, violet, lavender or pink, often with thin white margins. May be quite fragile, especially along extended edges. Colonies are so individually variable in appearance, and yet similar to one another, that they cannot easily be distinguished visually. Positive indentification requires laboratory examination." HTH
