help with derasa

on one side of my derasa the old shell is splitting from the new growth. there appears to be some type of tube that looks like it has grown in between the old and new growth causing the old shell to stick out about 1/4" from the shell. it looks like if i somehow removed this tube, the part that is splitting would just snap back against the rest of the shell. it is only spliiting on one side, closer to the intake syphon. should i try to remove the clam and pry that tube/calcium deposit? and see if the shell will snap back or what?

i wish i could but i dont have a camera. there is about 1/4" of white new shell growth all over the clam, but on one side right between the new growth and the old growth the shell is splitting, the split appears to be because of some type of tube that looks jammed between the old/new growth. the clam is about 7" and the split is about 2" long and makes the shell stick out 1/4" from the rest of the shell.
