Is it possible that the water can be too clean for LPS? I have been having problems keeping Paly's or Zoo's and ACAN's. But Torch and Duncans are off the hook along with all SPS.

I have done major water changes, gone without dosing, bought a Poly Filter to rule out metals in the water and it came out clean with no color.

My LFS is telling me that I have to get use to the idea that I have a SPS ONLY tank. Is this true? If so, how do I go about shutting it down and starting all over for a LPS tank? This is what I wanted to start with. I ma loosing Chalices like LE Bubble Gum Monster, Jayda's Watermelon and Bazooka Joe. I took them out and put them in a friends tank.

I can not figure out why LPS won't grow or yet Chalices receed.

You might check your animals. I was having a similar problem with my acans and chalices, nothing else. SPS growing like crazy and good coloration. At first my thought was maybe my water is too clean and my SPS's happiness is to the detriment of my LPS so I moved my LPS into my frag tank downstairs.

Strange thing is that in my frag tank the chalices are doing fine now in the frag tank. The frag tank is on the same water system the only difference is the lighting and the inhabitants so I ruled out the water issue.

Next I tried to move the chalices in my display tank into a significantly more shaded area as I run 400w MH's in the display tank and a much more reduced T-5 setup in the frag tank. Again I still had the same problem.

Thus my only deduction at this point is that it is one of my fish or perhaps one of my invertabrates picking on the chalices and making them recess.

Still have yet to deduce the actual trouble maker but I fell like this has to be it.

SPS and LPS can do well together in the same tank but it is a fine balance between the LPS wanting the lower light and dirtier water and the SPS wanting cleaner water and more light.

Probably not much help to your issue but at least it may give you a starting point.

FWIW my fish are:

1 Hippo Tang
1 Purple Tang
1 Desarjini Tang
1 Magnificant foxface
1 Black spot foxface
1 Bellarus Wrasse
1 Mystery Wrasse
1 Yellow Choris Wrasse
1 Maroon Clown
and 1 Fairy Wrasse

I don't visably see any of them picking on the chalices or acans but my suspicion is one of the tangs.
