Hi guys

New member
I wanted to buzz in and say hello.

I've been into the hobby for nearly 6 years salt and 11+ years total (fresh before).

I currently run a mixed reef 75 gal with 10 gal HOB fug and custom wet/dry.

I have various corals and 6 fish.

I live in Southern Illinois (Christopher), seems that I am one of the few people into this in the area.
:blown:

I'm always looking to meet fellow reefers and I enjoy frag swapping. I know a guy in Columbia, IL but that's about as far West as I've gone.

Nice to meet everyone!

to Reef Central and SLASH!

You guys seem to be a pretty close group. How many people do you regularly see? Frag swapping a big thing with you guys? I have a mixed sps, softie and LPS tank...growing more every day. Wish I was closer to St. Louis, more salty lovers in your guy's area.

Welcome Drew,

Yes, its pretty cool having a bunch of local reefers nearby. I was in the same boat as you several years back when I lived in Murphysboro. I knew just one guy that was into reefing near me.

Welcome I have a close friend that lives in cristopher he doesn't have a tank:( I live in centralia if your ever this way give me a shout

What is your friend's name in Christopher? You should get him into tanks. lol.

I also know a guy near murphy...he is running a 90 GAL tank. Any of you guys ever make it my way?

Brian claxton he thought about getting a tank for awhile but I guess it just wasn't his thing oh well

Here is the tank I'm working with. Before and after some additional aquascape.

My SPS has grown very quickly, but I'm having troulbe keeping the balance of softie/sps happiness. lol. My softies are slowly dieing off on me because of the "clean" water conditions. EX: My xenia slowly dieing more everyday over the last few months.

Also, I've found a small spot of red slime. (Found dead hermit that was about 2" LARGE). What's your guys advice with dealing with this? Also, I should add I added nearly 70 lbs of dead rock that I attempted to cycle for 3 months. I'm afraid it is slowly releasing the trates and phos too. I use a 5 stage RO/DI which I would assume isn't allowing anything through (I read 000TDS all day)

Also, my tank is slowly adjusting to the new lighting. I went from 4 x T5HO to a hybrid 2x T5 and an additional 24 LEDS (12 RB and 12 CW crees), fully dimmable.

Here is a video after the LED addition (Doesn't show skimmer nearly as well as real life):

Also, I wanted to ask you guys about my salinity level. It seems that no matter how high i make my salt batch (water change water), I can't get my level higher than 1.020...I'd like it to be 1.026

What could cause this?

What are you testing it with? Are you testing both your water change water and tank water with the same tester? You can top-off with saltwater rather than fresh in order to raise your salinity.

I'm using my refract on both. I test my tank @ 1.020 then test my new water @ 1.026-7 then add...and about two -three days later, my level is back to 1.020..constant battle!

I suspect there is something coming out of the rock messing with my levels. You never "Truely" know what someone had in their tank or how long this rock set dead. I did my best with the rock as far as cycling, cooking, etc...it's been in my tank about 2 months now (slowly getting some coraline)

What brand of salt are you using? I switched to coralife because rc wasnt keeping it's salinity on me

I'm at a loss on this one. Don't know what would cause salinity to drop other than diluting with freshwater, or a change in temperature.
