High capacity GFO vs Regular

Anyone use the gfo on eBay? It's about $70 for 6lbs. Seems way more cost effective even if you have to change it more often

I think I need something little more strong. If the regular cant bring it down to where I want it. Think High capacity will? Im not sure if high capacity is stronger or does it just last longer?

I just bought some ebay stuff to compare with brs. Ill give it a shot. lil cheaper than BRS, but has free shipping.

Good questions Mike. I use regular and am curious myself.

Is the ebay one HC or regular?

ebay stuff seems exactly the same as BRS.. there's two things in this post I don't like, one is running GFO, the other is BRS.

Eddie, Ill have to run an experiment.

The high capacity stuff has now become more affordable via aquamaxx

But ill try the cheaper ebay stuff for a bit

I use the EBay stuff. Don't have high capacity experience to compare.

Hey Mike, Thought you were using Lanthanum?

I have some of the High capacity BRS GFO if you want to try it.

Alright Matt. Educate this dummy. What is strontium nitrate. How is it used? Any articles?

Matt, Marvin and I are experimenting with methanol denitrators in their larger systems. It's basically an isolated chamber where we grow heterotrophic bacteria that removes nitrogen (nitrates) when fed Methanol. I've been running one for over 2 years now. For the most part it has been very successful. Lately we have been experimenting with strontium nitrate in the chamber to help remove phosphates; we have had limited success with Strontium nitrate.

If you are interested I can send you PDF copies of research articles from Adolf Klostermann about the use of methanol denitraters and strontium nitrate. Just PM me your email address and I'll send you copies.

Dr. Thompson, IMHO- If an advanced aquarist and PhD in Chemistry (You) is having "limited success", how is this something that can be sent out as a blanket statement for others to use? Not you Dr....... MrX...:crazy1::worried:

I have used both BRS high capacity and regular. The high capacity doesn't remove PO4 to a lower number but just last about a week longer before needing changed. I currently just use the regular. Economically makes no sense to run the high capacity.

I do plan to use the eBay/amazon brand next. Price is way better and from what I have heard it is the same as BRS

Lmao. ... I agree.

Well hats off to Dave as he really has pushed the envelope in reef keeping. He has graced us with AWC and now a denitrater that is affordable to run. I can't wait till I see what this mad scientist comes up with next. ????

Didnt really want go into details, this thread is about GFO ;)

The methanol denitrator has been GREAT for removing nitrates. I would consider the nitrogen removing capability to be a complete success!

The strontium supplementation to remove phosphates is limited. It does help but I still occasionally use GFO. I'm still trying to get a handle on the proper dosing also. This part is definitely still an ongoing experiment.
