I just recieved a hipoppus clam today from coralsandbar. It looks cool. its my first clam and I chose it because it is one of the lower light clams and I have pc lighting on my tank. anyways it has purple dots going along the edges of it. Should I try to put a rock under it or is the substrate(aragonite) just fine? It opened up today with no problems. also when the mouth is open does that mean it is hungry or that it could be stressed from an overnight trip? It not as pretty as everyone maximas but I still think its a pretty clam =].

Mouth wide open usually means stressed from the trip however hipoppus dont close their mouths the same way tridacnids do so it might be normal. It will do fine in the sand attached to nothing but probably would attach to a rock if you put one there for it.

the mouth on mine stays very narrow throughout the day. they are a very cool clam and super hardy. mine grows like a weed ~1" in 6 months. not the prettiest but they have a really neat mantle pattern.

cool thanks for info. I assumed it was from stress. I wont get a chance to look at it much today being as I am working 16 hours today.

mine is now dead after 3 days in tank. Yesterday it was beautiful with the mantle looking normal. today all i see is the muscle that is the clam. the covering is gone. not sure if clam is dead or not cause it does seem to still open and close but the outside covering is completly gone unlike yesterday.
