Ok so i work at a lfs, here in tulsa, and i had set my sister up with a 12 gallon aqua pod. It had gone through cycled tested all of her chemicals. and we put a royal gramme in there first he was doing amazing. so she really wanted a hippo. we had gotten these extremely tiny hippos that were no larger than a 3/4 of an inch. I knew he was going to grow pretty fast so i would throw him in my tank when he out grows my sisters. i have a 90 gallon i had him for about 3 days he was eating about 5 minutes after i released him. he was doing fine. i started a calcium buffer a couple days befor adding him. but i come home today and hes dead. this morning he was alive but when i got home dead.

ANY IDEAS?
o and no markings on his body

Small ones, on average, have pitiful survival rates.
I believe that's true also.

Yes, I agree small ones have a terrible survival rate. One LFS in this area won't carry hippos for that reason. They will special order one, but guarantee nothing. I don't think I would buy one under 2", as I've had bad luck with anything smaller.

The number of fish in a hatch indicates a high mortality: that's pretty well true of minute freshwater angels, and certainly of tiny marine fish.

I donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t agree I, know a lot of people that have had success with the small hippos, including my self with one under two inches. I have had mine for over seven years now. You take the same chance with a larger one as a small one that is wild caught, unless the small one is a tank rased fish like the one I have. You will have a better chance of survival with those. They are hard to find I see them occasionally.

How are the other fish at the shop?
How many dead?
How were they acclimated at the store?
How long were they at the store?
Are they all eating?

My lfs has told me the same- small are risky. Sometimes the only ones they can get are small ones- and, customers demand them all the same. I am looking for 1 right now, all the ones in my area are SMALL, so I am going out of the area to get one. I'm very sorry for your loss! regards..

Well we had 4 of them they were a bit over priced so customers werent really buying them both me and my managar bought one. mine died of unknown reasons, his got stuck to the overflow, We drip acclimate our fish, and we feed them a few times throught the day not alot tho like 2 or 3 actual peices of brine none would hit the bottom
