How do I need to hang my lights?

I got some cheap shop light fixtures for my 90 for the time being. These are just some flourescents now but I will be upgrading lighting. I know I will be hanging them from the ceiling but can someone give me some advice on materials and a plan or example. Heres some pics of my tank with the lights just resting on the top. How far do they need to be from the top of the tank?

Hello, That is a great question. I also would like advice about hanging lights. My light is sitting on these little footings and I have had them break once already. I worry constantly and it would be nice to be able to work in my tank without taking off the light!

Just a couple hooks and some chain will do the trick. Its no different then hanging a plant.

I would either build a canopy of find a local woodworker or cabinet guy to do it. Then you can hang your lights inside the canopy. Beside framing your tank nicely it wonlt have those ugly cables dropping from the ceiling.

Like I said, this is until I can get an upgrade (MH).

Blown, I'm not worried about the upgrade in lighting because that will be later on(plus I know how far up the MH will be), I need advice for the bulbs I have now. 2 10K and 2 actinics. How far up from the tank should they be?

How do I make sure I have a stud up there? Do you have to find a stud to screw it in to?

Normal flourescent bulbs can be as close as you want them to be provided they are high enough or shielded from salt water spray.
