How do you run your Eheim return, external or internal?

I just got a 1260 for my 90, and I can't decide how I want to run it. I can see pro's and con's to both, so I'm split. How are the Eheim owners running their pumps?

I run mine in my sump, it's a tad quieterthat way. Adds a small amount of heat though. raises my temps by 1/2 -1 degree compared to out of sump.

Agreed, it's a very quiet pump. The quietest I could find.
Still I can hear it (if external) when my fans are not on, and that bugs me.

I have a 1250 plumbed outside the sump on my 90. First time I connected it I must not have sealed the inlet to the impeller chamber properly because I soon had a flood on my hands. Took it apart and re-assembled it and all is well. The 1250 is dead silent. I am impressed with the Eheim's. But they should supply fittings for hard plumbing. I was forced to use a flexible return line because there are very few fittings for 3/8" FPT. The fittings that Eheim includes in the box cannot be glued. I think they are nylon or polypropylene.

Hey Chrismo! You hang out at RC too?

I'm likely just going to use flexible tubing to plumb mine, but I may try PVC fittings with spa flex.

If you want to hard plumb your Eheim, you can get metric adapters from Ryan Herco. That's where I found the parts to make an adapter to go from the 3/8" BSP threads on my 1250 to standard 1" PVC.

Chris, I think I love you. That is a seriously great resource, now I don't have to worry about my clamp/hosebarb fitting letting go... Thanks!

Do you remember the part names/descriptions/numbers? I'm having trouble figuring out which part(s) I need from there...

Thanks!

I have a 1260 return, a 1260 on my skimmer and a 1262 closed loop on my 72 all plumbed externally and about 3 feet from where I'm sitting. If it weren't for the minor resonance (a hum less noisy than the fans that came in my coralife MH lights) in the hard plumbing I wouldn't know they were on.

Here's some details on what I've used and/or found for connecting Eheims with metric PVC parts:

In my internet search for metric fittings I came across a company called Ryan Herco. You can download their catalog. They've got offices in several cities across the country. Turns out they have a small office here in ABQ (lucky me). They were really great to work with - good customer service. My parts were brought in from about 3 of their offices (Tempe, Chicago, and Orlando). It took about 2 weeks for everything to come in, but overall I'm really pleased.

Here's a link to their online listing of metric fittings. I ordered the following parts for my 1250:

Part # 3278.003 3/8 (16mm) Male thread adapter / Spigot x Taper Male Thread
Part # 3229.073 20mm x 16mm Reducer bushing (socket x socket)
Part # 3229.130 32mm x 20mm Reducer bushing (socket x socket)
Part # 3235.010 32mm x 1" Metric socket x FNPT adapter
Part # 3231.010 32mm x 1" Metric socket x IPS socket adapter

I could have ordered the 32mm x 16mm reducing bushing, but was told it was at least a 1 month lead time, so I went with the two bushings instead of the one.

Hope this helps.

edit -- I've found that the downloadable pdf catalog is easier to use than the online version. Look on pages 146-147 in the pdf catalog for metric fittings.

For 3/4 BSP/NPT conversion, you could go with:

3278.007 3/4" (25mm) Male Thread Adapter spigot x taper male thread
3231.007 3/4" (25mm) Adapter Coupling metric socket x IPS socket

It's a lot easier to convert BSP to NPT/IPS for sizes 1/2" and bigger.

As I recall, the 1260 and 1262 pumps have 3/4" inlets and outlets. The 1250 has a 1/2" inlet and a 3/8" outlet.

Here's a thread with some info on the fitting sizes for some of the Eheims in case anyone needs to double check: 1260 Fitting Size Thread

Submerged In Sump so I dont have to worry about having to restart/prime it when there's a stoppage. It's silent.

I have 2 x 120mm fans in the hood, and I recently added a 80mm fan in the cabinet where the sump is. Now my temperature is a constant 79-80*. So additional heat is negligible at the most.

I think I'm just going to do it in-sump. Biggest reason? Saves space. If I put it external I'd lose a lot of valuable under-tank stand room.
