how live is live sand

When I go to the LFS and see bags of live sand, I wonder how long they have been sitting on the shelf and how long does the bacteria stay alive?

It doesn't really matter as it's a waste of money anyway.

Any sand will have bacteria within days of being put into the water. And that's free!

I have read that most of the bacteria die off in the bag but some remain alive because the bag is moist on the inside. However if you want LS just ask the LFS to take a scoop out of a few of their tanks. Usually they don't charge for it otherwise slip them a $5 and I'm sure they would be more than happy to. If you really want some good LS then checkout garf.org. I have heard nothing but good things about them and what their grunge has to offer. Maybe someone would argue with me on this. I know thats what I am planning on doing...

How live is it? I don't know.
But often times when I see someone buying a bag of 'live sand' you can often here the LFS employees say things like 'We've got a live one'. :)
