How long should metal halides be on

The algae is not a problem of the light, but nutrients.

How old is the tank? What is growing on the glass?

I would say its both nutrients and strong lighting.... You may try and reduce the lighting schedule, and see if that helps.

It's been up for about three weeks and was seeded with water from my first tank right now I have the light on for about 8-10 hours is it possible it's just cycling cuz the damsel in there is doing great

your tank is still new... it will take time for things to settle down. have you been checking your levels? i agree with the rest on the nutrients.

i would run my MH over my 24g aquapod for 8-10 hours. but i do believe it ended up staying at 8 hours for the longest time.

Water doesn't seed your tank.
If that's all you brought over from the old tank (no rock or sand), then it did nothing but add dirty water to your tank. So yes, the tank does need to cycle.
8-10 hours is a long time for MH.
Especially on a brand new tank.
