I have a 30 gallon. I have 30 pounds of live rock and have added several soft and and a couple of SPS corals. I have 6 fish. They are fairly small, but this seems to be about the right number for my setup.
General rule for # of fish is 1 inch per 2 gallons of water, and you should allow more water for bigger bodied fish.......5 inches of clownfish is really different than 5 inches of a larger bodied species like a grouper or batfish.
Remember that they need room to swim and do their fishy thing. It also depends on how much live rock you've got and your husbandry. Most folks here have a 1:1 ratio of rock to tank volume. Also, you should figure out how much actual water volume you have with a volume calculator that subtracts your rock and sand:
