i currently have three fish in my tank and was wondering how many is too many? i have a 29 gallon biocube with two clowns and one royal gramma. for anybody else with a 29 gallon, how many fish and what kind do you have? thanks!

Its not necessarily how many fish or how many inches of fish but you have to take into consideration their adult size, agressions, feeding habits etc... You will get alot of different answers here on the forum. I would suggest a possible a dwarf angel of some kind... flame angel or coral beaty are my favorites

the flame angel wouldn't be too big? i do like the way it looks as well. i forgot to add, i keep coral in my tank. is the flame reef safe?

Maybe! Some are and some aren't. Also some may start out fine and get aggressive as they mature. The nice thing about a 29 gallon is that it's small enough that it shouldn't be too hard to remove a fish if you have to.

I'd also recommend that if you decide to add a dwarf angel, do it last. I have also had better luck with coral beauties than I have with Flame's for what that's worth. If it were my tank, I might add the Coral Beauty but then I'd stop. Your clown's and the angel can reach between 3 & 4 inches each although the gramma will stay smaller. Good Luck!

i have a 30 long, in it are two clowns, one royal gramma, one flame angel, and one court jester goby.

i agree with drhank, i added my angel last and have no issues thus far. the gramma tries to be the boss of the tank, but he runs and hides when the angel gets too close, go figure.

Dwarf Angels really need more room. You may not have issues at first but Flames get aggressive...I have one in my 240 and believe me, he swims every inch of the tank, very active.
IMO 2 Clowns and a Royal Gramma is perfect for a 30 gallon.

IMHO your tank is too small for any dwarf angel other than a cherub (Centropyge argi). Your tank is nicely stocked now. Instead of adding another fish you could add inverts - emerald crab, cleaner shrimp, hermit crabs, exotic snails, sexy shrimp, etc.

If you want to add another fish it would have to be something relatively small that could also hold its own: yellow-tailed damsel, green chromis, six-line wrasse, fridmani pseudochromis, etc.

I have a 29 (36" long) and have a pair of percs, a large pink-spotted goby, and a pygmy/cherub angel. I did try to add a mate for the angel, didn't work out though.

Thank you! I subscribed to this thread hoping someone would say this. (Yes, that's how lazy I am ;) )

My LFS has a 40,000g tank with a flame and that fish actually swims every inch of that tank! :eek2: It also looks a lot calmer than mine do in my 100g. :(

Bob Fenner says he wouldn't put even a cherub angel in anything smaller than a 40g (a fully grown adult cherub). He's not crazy - he's seen them in all different circumstances, captive and wild and knows what he's talking about.

They are grazing fish -- Grazers are hardwired to need a certain amount of grazing territory to feel secure in spite of the fact that food falls from the "sky" everyday.

And to add to what Monkeyfish said, a cleaner shrimp is spectacular in a tank that size. They can even be paired. They'll hangout together in the same spot - very spectacular display IMO>
