How old can we expect fish to live until?

I have only had my purple tang for five years. I assume that is not a long time. ( The 250 year old tortoise in India recently died.....)
But we never hear discussions of fish dieing of just palin old age!
So could you guys give me some examples of real success stories in terms of life in captivity. (or the wild for that matter.) Any type fish will do.

from everything i read marine fish are for the most part rather long-lived if taken cared of properly. i ve read that clowns can reach 20 years, while fishes like tangs and triggers also reaching 20 years. hy experience with reefs i only two years, so i have a while to wait and see how long my guys last.

if everything is done well, they should last a long time. with freshwater, ive had mollies and neon tetras reach almost 6 yrs of age. actually a pair of mollies i have now are almost 6, as well as a pair of gouramis, and if freshwater fish are a proper example, you should be able to see in a fishes behavior how old he or she is

I think up to 20-25 years can be pretty normal for a lot of fish
You have to remember, in the wild there are predators
So the chances of living that long in the wild may be less
But in an aquarium of proper size & if water quality & tank are maintained - then quite a while
