How to tell if corals are too close together???

I have a green ricordea, xenia and some zoos all about 1 inch from each other. They seem to be doing fine and the xenia can't spread onto the others because it's on it's own rock/island, but they are growing taller and longer and are getting pretty close to the rics and zoos.

How can I tell if things are too close together?

Your corals will start to die.

you may also see some bleaching, which is when your corals will slowly turn white, i had some zoos do this one time, i could never figure out why they did that because the shrooms were bout 5-8 inches away from each other. good luck and keep reefin

Is there a general rule of thumb about how far they need to be from each other? And which ones are compatible?

For example, would zoos of different colors be ok next or touching each other?

You really need to do some research on the types of corals. Some corals send out sweepers that are poison tipped. They use these to clear an area around them. Some corals need high circulation compared to others. They usually demand higher dissolved oxygen levels too so overcrowding results in decline. There is no hard and fast general rule.
