Hi all...I'm getting many sm. patches of polyps that look like hydroids. He said not to worry the hermits would eat them off the LR,and they would not sting the leather or buttons. This info goes aganist what i've read in TRA,so would appreciate input from others that have had these fuzzy lil stalked polyps pop up.Please my mind!..TIA...Tommy

Do they look like an anemone? They might be the pest anemone Aiptasia;if not, I wouldn't worry about them.fwiw, kas

No KASESQ,these are not aiptasia, they have a very dark brown stalk with off white to tan fuzzy tops. The colonies are dence like the top picture on p 431 of TRA V2.My hermits did eat some, but i had thought it was just to get at some formula 1 that had fallen in them. Now i'm seeing some new polyps,so if they are eating them its at a slow pace.Anyone else seen these hydroids in their tank?

Tommy,
Hydroids are such a pain in the A$$!
I found a pretty easy way to get rid of them. As long as you can get the rock they're on out of the tank, this technique will work. On rocks that I found the Hydroids I would pull the rock out of the tank and put some drops of Crazy Glue on the colonies. It would smother them and they never came back. At least not on the rocks I glued. I still have them in the tank, but in small patches here and there. I think J.Sprung said Limpets or Chitons will eat them, but it's not definte. I never heard or saw hermits that would eat them. I guess you learn something new everyday. ;)
Later,
Bill

Thanks RJ..Bummer is several patches are on base rocks. How long did you allow it to cure before putting it back in your tank?Did it affect your skimmer?Tommy

Hi Tommy,

Some keyhole limpets will graze on hydroids, but they are unlikely to remove established colonies.

An easy way to control them is to use the same method many folks use for Aiptasia. Make a paste of some kalkwasser powder (CaOH2) and water. Should be about the consistancy of thick cream or thin mud. Nuke it in a microwave for 30 sec. or so. Use a syringe to apply the the colony. This paste will kill the polyps it lands on. Repeated applications a few days apart will kill a colony.

Cheers, Ron

Hi John,

Heating it makes it a more cohesive paste, and the heat also seems to help it flow better.

Hi Ron
Thanks, had wondered if the kalk paste would work.Dose my description sound acurate?I'm pretty sure both types are hydroids, but if ya know where i can see a good clear pic,it would make me feel better about killing them all off.
Tommy

Hi Tommy,

Yup. Your description was just fine.
They sound like hydroids, but you might wish to simply do a web search using the terms "hydroid" or "Hydrozoa" and I think you may find plenty of pictures.

Cheers, Ron
