I Broke The Rules

and may need your help. I bought a Baby Max Clam. He looks healthy the colorful part (mantle) contracts and expands however when I turn him upside down he just hs an opening there is no tissue there I assume that is were the bysus should be. I searched on here as much as possible, next step is to by a book. I do put him in a cup/bowl and feed DT's every other day for 30min. My lights right now are 464 watt pc going into a 75 g tank. I know understand that lights wont matter much till he gets a little older/bigger. My main question is shouldn't there be something sticking outta the hole on the bottom of the clam?? or does he pull that all the way inside whe i touch him. any other advise would be greatly appreciated thanks.

PLEASE!!!

Wish you had a picture of it. You say he is reacting well toward shadows? You should be able to see something in the byssal opening.

yes there is "meat" inside but I just thought it would be outside the byssal opening so he could attach to the rock or in the sand. Also I read in one article to put them on the sand bed and then in another article to put them on rock. One article says they are found in shallow water in the substrate and another deep in the ocean on slate. Talk about double talk... What do you reccomend. Oh and I saw your clams......VERY NICE I think I want to order a normal size one.

Placing a clam is very controversial to say the least. In Daniel Knop book, "Giant Clams" he like to place in the LR.

I think the distance from the light should be considered also as well as what kind of clam. Some clams like the T. Maxima and T. Crocea like intense light. Should also consider by placing in LR, it could fall off behind the rock and then what?

In my personal tank, I have larger (3") Maxima and Crocea's in the LR and a few Derasa in the sand bed.

You will get all sorts of suggestion on that topic.

Thanks for visiting my site. :)
