i went to the lfs today and got a peacock mantis. he was 30 bucks. he is in my main tank right now in a little container until the water clears in my 10 gallon tank that i just set up. anything special i need to know other than the obvious watch your hands and what not?

congrats!

congrats!

congrats on your new mantis! could you tell us more on how you finally snagged your mantis? i know you've been looking for quite awhile...

i went to pets warehouse. they have a site www.petswarehouse.com they had 4. a peacock, a p. ciliata(i believe), another colorful one but not as colorful as a peacock, and a big brown one. they were 30 bucks each.

hmmm....i wonder what that other colorful one is.....i'm actually more interested in that than a peacock...was thinking about dropping by there today to check, but i can't stand new york for long, and had to get back to work.

everyone talks about watching the mantis strike it's prey and this and that. i have mine in a small container until the tank is cleared up. it's in my main display now. the container is a little bigger than a peanut butter container. i carefully drop frozen food in, and he will grab it with his legs or appendages if that's what they are. and he eats it but he doesnt strike it. also the hermit crabs keep going over to his container but he doesnt act on it. is it because he knows he's in a container or he isn't interested?

if you're giving him frozen food, what's the point of him striking it? as in my case, they simply take the food and start munching into it.

with regards to the hermits, perhaps he's not hungry...you were feeding him frozen food, if i remember....unlike human beings, they kill for food most of the time, not sport, recreation, religion, or just for the heck of it.

is it true that i should feed him live food every now and then so he can use his smashers. i think i read that if they arent used for a period of time they will become weak and fall off. this true?

LOL - that'll be one happy stomatopod if you feed it lobster.

i occassionally throw in a feeder goldfish (and yes, i know about freshwater problems) or small turbo snail or hermits. i also have used crayfish (But only a couple times a long whiles back and only because i was curious about it at the time), even ones larger than the mantis (in fact, one of the quicktime movies posted is of a crayfish being smashed by a mantis). i don't sweat it if the mantis does not immediately eat the live food. i noticed that different mantis seem to have different personalities...some are leery of tackling large prey, others immediately eye the newcomer and sooner or later it's gone.

BUT, the vast majority of time, i feed it frozen food...

yes i saw t hat video. and all of those links for the videos are not all up. how many mantis shrimp do you have?

mantis

now i only have one, a large Gonodactylus chiragra that is very cool. i have cared for several since 1998, at one point having 4 smashers (inc 2 peacocks)...since i got married, the boss has curtailed my activities, but now that we're settling down i may start creating that mantis community tank i've always wanted.

i tend to like the smaller mantis better, and smashers definitely over spearers.

what happened to the mantis?

what happened to the mantis?

hnk posted that there were 3 mantis shrimps left in www.petswarehouse.com after he had bought one....i phoned them today to inquire about them, and it seems they don't have them anymore (although the lady said they were getting some from indonesia next week)...when i asked what happened to the ones there, she said they may have been sold....darnit, i was hoping to pass by there and look at the colorful mantis!!!!

strange. i havent had mine for long at all. and when i did have mine they said the 4 they had were there for a week. that means someone must've bought a few. dont even bother speaking to a woman. when i called she didnt know anything. their price on their website says a mantis is 8 dollars. she didnt even know anything about it. she told me to talk to some guy named bill(i think).

Well I got to see mine whack a ghost shrimp today. I dropped it in, he came out of his hole whacked it, sent it flying, ran back under a rock, then came back whacked it again, drug it into his hole. Ate everything except the head and threw that out. Wish I had a video camera!! It was so cool. I usually feed it shrimp pellets.
