Does anyone have a pic of a gaping clam? I am looking for a clam and I want a healthy one. any other pics of an unhealthy clam would be cool too.

I went looking for one as well, about a year ago, and never found one, however, a gaping clam will typically have his inhalant open to an "O" shape, as opposed to a slit.

If the clam is a Squamosa, there are frilly bits aorund the mouth. If it is unhappy and gaping, then the frilly bits are retracted.

Ok after reading the second post I observed that he said that the clam is also unresponsive to changing of light conditions and touch. Is it possible then to say that if your clam is still responsive, but the opening appears large, then your clam is not gaping? I don't have one that may have this, but I want to know what exactly to look for at the lfs.

Thx in advance,
Johnny G.

I have a brand new T.Crocea that gapes wide open. It is a huge round hole, but, you can see the frilly edges. It also is very responsive to light and is well expanded. I assume this is normal.

don't worry about it. It's normal. It happens with croceas every time they change to a new environment. After a little while, that hole will close up. Every crocea I've seen does that when it's introduced into a new environment.
