I REALLY want Angelfish in my tank (reef?) - HELP!!!

I REALLY want at least a flame Angel and a Regal Angel in my new tank that I will be setting up.

I have heard that there are certain types of coral that they won't bother - because they are poisonous or taste bad, or...?

Anyone know which corals this would be?

I like corals that move/flow in the water like:

Lavender Mushroom
Green Star Polyp
Pipe Organ
Ricordea - Florida (doesn't move a lot, but...)

Any ideas?

It's always about trade offs. Flame would be more 'reef safe' than the regal. My Regals always ate Zooanthids, sometimes ate LPS and clams, and never ate mushrooms or SPS. Flames are a bit less problematic. Mind picks on elegance coral and clams, but that's about it for now.

I have a Lamarck Angle who is a model citizen. I know it's not a Flame or Regal, but I like the fact it's different.

Better pictures.

This one is mine and is a female. The black line running down the body is curved, on a male it's straight. They will change sex, I'm waiting for my LFS to get another small one in.

All the corals you named plus Euphyllia and war corals would be fine also. Stay away from zoos and fleshy meaty lps and you will be good

Do I get the corals first and then add the Regal at a later date?

Or add the Regal first - I am told that it should be one of the first, if not the first, fish to add because it is so docile it needs to pick out its territory first without being hassled.

And the Flame should be put in last.

Not only would the corals mentioned be okay, but you could even try some zoas and other lps (start with very small frags). Some Angels never even end up picking at them. It's worth a shot, especially once you've had them for a while and they are used to what you are feeding them.

Add corals first let them get established before adding the regal, otherwise you may add a coral and it goes south and you blame the angel when he had nothing to do with it.

Not sure about that... I blame my Regal for the disappearance of all my Zoas AND ricordea...

I have a Singapore Angel and so far he has not touched any of my corals. He picks at the rock and even the rim of the tank up top.

I've had a flame for about 2.5 years and he doesn't touch any corals. They are definitely one of the safer bets (Bellus is a good choice too) as far as being reef safe. That said, it's still a gamble at whether or not most angels will nip at stuff. Similar to you, I've wanted a regal (And a bandit), but didn't want to take the chance.

My experience, i have a coral beauty in a mixed reef for about 4 months and so far so good. I just make sure i feed them enough (twice pellets automatically through apex and mysis for dinner).

Angel fish of any kind in a reef tank are a gamble. I have a coral beauty and a majestic angel that haven't touched a coral in the tank in 4 years. My wife and I are sitting in front of the tank right now watching them eat my frogspawn. Fish are like people they can change at any time.

Feed them! lol

I found that my flame was nibbling on corals until I started feeding the tank more heavily. Now she leaves all corals alone
