I think I have a Mantis

So here's the story.......
My wife and are both total newbies in reef keeping.
We've had our first tank up and running a little over 2 months now.

It's a 56 gallon tank with 4" DSB and about 80 pounds of Fiji, Tonga, and FL live rock. After going through a brown algae bloom followed quickly by a green hair bloom, we got a good size clean up crew. Mostly hermits and an assortment of snails and a detrivore kit. After the tank settled in and the nitrites went to zero, we got a small clown, 2 blue damsels, and a small yellow tang spread out over two weeks.

Last week I started to see a bunch of empty shells laying around the tank. And my wife thought she saw some movement way inside a hole in the rock. A few days later she saw what she described as a nasty looking black thing about 2" long with eyes sticking up over it's head. I set up a camera and tried to get a picture but it decided it was camera shy........

So on our next trip for RO/DI water at the LFS we asked if they had any idea what was killing our hermits. The guy at the store showed us a tank and said "look familiar"? Guess what, it was a Mantis Shrimp. He said get it out of your tanks asap or it will kill everything! Of course that freaked out my wife who absolutely loves her fish. Me being the calm one decided to check out this forum.

Good thing I did, I got some good ideas on how to catch the little fella. Unfortunately, he was smarter than the traps. I just happened to get lucky and see him go into a hole in the LR. Of course it was at the bottom of a stack, and I darn near knocked over half my tank getting the rock out. I rinsed off the rock in some fresh RO/DI water and out he came.

Not wanting to flush the little guy, I put him in a 15 gal tank we had been using to cure our LR before we added it to the big tank.

SO, here's the good part?
It looks like my little fella was a She. The 15 gal tank that was empty except for a couple of snails and urchins is now Full of what look like tiny little Mantis Shrimps. They are about 1/8" long, almost transparent, and look just like a tiny version of momma.
Now comes the questions... Is this for real? What am I to do with what looks like a tank full of babies? I sure don't want to fry 'em, but if they are as bad as the LFS guy says, I really don't want to keep them. And now my wife wants to drain the 15 gal and start it over..................

I'm open for suggestions!

I really wouldn't worry about the baby mantis surviving. Most likely they will starve to death or get sucked up a pump.

Hey, I found a baby mantis too!!

Hey, I found a baby mantis too!!

Hey, I had a baby mantis in my aquarium and I took it out and it seems to be doing fine now. Here's what to do...If its in a rock that you can get too....try this.

1. Take out the rock and break it open (carefully cuz if you dont want it..I do!!!!:D )

2. Take out the rock and shoot fresh water into the cave he's into. If the water comes out...that means he's probably got a whole network of caves in there...like mine did (same thing applies again)

Hey, sorry about the post before..I just skimmed the post..not really reading the whole thing. But if you dont want it....please give it to me... I really want another mantis!!!!

Hi All,

Thanks for your replies.
I am not sure just yet what I am going to do with her.
My wife wants her gone and the tank sterilized, but I am intrigued.

I can say that it is one interesting little critter. The 15 gal tank she is in has 2 small pieces of LR so I can see when she has made her home. This is one smart bug! I have seen her take bits of crushed rock and seal up the entrance to her little hiding place.
And the tank is literally crawling with dozens of babies.

I am going to try and get a picture to post and find out for sure what she really is.

In the meantime, is there any special care or food she will need?

Thanks for your help!

There is lots of stuff you can feed them. Brine shrimp cubes, Crabs, snails, silversides.....all of them will work. I feed my mantis crabs and brine shrimp cubes and he seems very happy. If there are baby's, congrats my friend. Many people have tried to keep baby's...and failed....Please keep us posted (and consider my request :D )

Before you drain the tank, take a look at http://web.odu.edu/sci/biology/amphome/ . What you have is probably a batch of harmless amphipods. You never really notice them until you spend a lot of time staring at the walls, bottom, and rock in the tank, then you notice that you have a ton of them. They are detritivores, so they clean your tank, and they tend to hide in the crevices of live rock when you buy it. Since you cured your rock in that tank, I bet that's what you have!

i recommend you put it in a citterkeeper
and put the critterkeeper in your main tank until you find something to put the mantis in.
:)

I finally got the critter to poke his/her head out for a pic.
Hopefully someone can confirm if it really is a Mantis.

Quick question, I had some critters that I thougt were baby mantis. However, they do look like amphiods as shown in the link. Mine are as fast as the roadrunner. In fact, so fast, that I cannot get a picture. Would the speed help to confirm their name?

Fuzzy, what kind of mantis is that. I have the same on in my tank except it has green eyes. Also could I use that pic of I.D. reasons?

I have absolutely no clue as to what kind of Mantis it is.
In fact up until I found this critter, I had never even heard of a Mantis:D

This is our first reef tank, it has only been up and running for about 3 months. So I'm still on the bottom end of the learning curve....... but thanks to Reef Central, I have been able to avoid a few big problems, before I shelled out a lot of cash!

Feel free to use the picture. My 'lil buddy decided to pose for the camera last night. I have quite a few others that are higher resolution and show more detail. The average file size is around 600K. Let me know if you would like me to e-mail some to you.

I don't know much about Mantis shrimp, but......
You say you have babies. Last I knew, it takes two. Is it possible Fuzzy has another mantis in his tank?

Boy, I sure hope not!
I almost destroyed my big tank catching this lil bugger.
I'm gonna stick with Jennifers explanation about the harmless amphipods!

But I'm still worried.
I admit I'm very new to reef keeping, and have a lot to learn.......

BUT, I have spent a lot of time looking at the tank. I've even done the red lens on a mag light in the dark bit.
And I never saw any of the little guys till I put the Mantis in there............

I don't think that you need to worry about another mantis in your big tank unless the animals in it are mysteriously disappearing. I also really doubt that what you are seeing are baby mantis
I've never had a mantis but in my limited experience shrimp larva are much smaller than that and don't really resemble the parent at all.
I did no research before setting up my first tank, and after a few weeks I started noticing things in my tank that I couldn't recognize. After looking on line for it I decided that they must be baby mantis[after all the looked quite a bit like tiny preying mantis], and they where everywhere. I was upset for some time, but they never did get any longer than about 1/4 of an inch, by and by I found out that what I had where beneficial amphipods.
Make sure to look at the link provided by jsronce before you get too upset.
