i think my plate just died

well i'm at a bit of a loss. cleaned the algea off of my tank this morning and all of my corals were doing great. left the house for a few hours to come home to find my plate very white with a kind of slime attached to it flowing with the current. can't seem to see any skin on it. nothing has changed in the tank. any information would be great. thanks.

it could have possibly been stung by another coral. plates are also prone to brown jelly disease, so that could be what your seeing. either way id suggest leaving it in place for a while even if it dies completely because its common for dead plates to sprout of dozens of tiny baby plates from the dead mother plate.

I have one that was a little too close to the glass and gave it a good shove with the mag float. It disappeared for a couple of days and then slowly showed signs of extending . About 2 weeks later it was the same as ever.

Be patient and it will probably bounce back.

no it's dead, there's no skin left, just the skeleton. so i'm left hopping that it left me with a gift of baby plates. thanks for the replies.

when you say baby plates, do you mean it release eggs into the water and hope they attach somewhere and grow fom a micro size?
or do you mean ones that you can actually see next to the mother?

They will actually 'bud' right on the skeleton of the mother coral. It may or may not happen, you might want to leave the skeleton in your tank for a month or two and see if anything appears.

I'm with mothra, leave it in place for at least a few weeks. I couldn't see any tissue at all for several days. Then I noticed some color and a few days later some tissue.

Are brains part of the plate family, and do they have a chance of doing it?

My plate just did this, the tentacles have disappeared and it has brown stuff on it which I am guessing is 'brown jelly'. Is there any risk of this brown jelly causing problems with any other corals? Everything else is fine at the moment, and I have no idea why the plate developed the problem, I have been feeding it and it seemed fine the day before.
