I Tried....But Failed

So on saturday i took a look at my saltwater tank and decided to change the aquascape. I took all the rocks out(left the water in the tank)...and noticed that i couldnt see a thing. It kinda got pretty late so just placed the rock in the tank. I am going to try again this upcoming weekend but not alone. I was wondering if an "experienced" aquascaper could stop by my house and help me out. As you have noticed i am a noob at this so that is why i need that help. I live in Centreville, Va. So if any of you want to help another reefer out(which will be greatly appreciated) just reply here or pm me. Also for everyone else out there who can not stop by my house....what steps do you take to change your rock setting.

Thanks for your help in advance.

To change your aquascape just use the rocks like you would when putting a puzzle together. Just make sure they arent stacked real tight, you want to have water flow between them.

It could take awhile before you get the rock work the way you want it.

the reason it looked dirty: when you took all of the rocks out it also stirred the sandbed, and all of the detrious came out...

I'd carefully take the rocks out, swish them in some salt-water (do a water change while your doing this-It'll remove some of the water, making your job easier) then, lay the peices out, and find neat holes, things like that.

I was in the same predicament as you are. After about 4 or 5 attempts at aquascaping, I broke down and called my friend's wife to help me out. Now, it looks more like a small reef and less like a rock farm. Get yourself a left brainer!!

I don't make house calls. :D Check the reef club forum and see if there is one near you. They are the best source of personal hand holding. Often they will follow you home if you have beer.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What I like you may not. Your aquascape might be just fine--just you may not like it.

PS-- Nice to have a HOT magnum with the micron filter running when re-doing rock work. Cleans the water of "dust".

the easiest way is to simply move them around without taking them out. i personally like to keep my rocks in the water because of all the live things living in them. do you have any snails or crabs or anything in there? because in taking out rocks you could bring them out too which probably wouldn't be that cool either:)

welcome to the hobby my friend...... there is no easy way. take the rock out. swish them in a bucket of salt water to get the detritus off. Restack your rocks. Do a water change. Thats how ive always done it.

The way I did was start in the middle and place the bottom rocks of the stacks. Then I took the rocks with nice holes and stacked them ontop of the bottom rocks leaving a few gaps between the rocks to make even more holes. Then I filled out the stack by placing more rocks on the bottom in front of the stack, which I think really helps it look good. Then you play around with the shape of the stack to your liking.

Hope this helps.

ive been reading around and many places are saying to take about 70-85% of the water out of the tank. then set the rocks and put them in the setting you like. once you have done that fill it back up and ur good to go. is this a good way to do it? has anyone tried it? howd it go?

Asaleem...

You are close to so many WAMAS members, you should really think of joining and then someone who is close would surely help.

You're about an hour away from me, and I would love to help, but it will be after this weekend before I could get to it.

I guess the real question is what are you trying to accomplish... beter aquascaping?

There is no reason to take the water out (in my opinion)...

I also wouldn't take all the rockout and put it back in either. Instead I would rearange in the tank (that's how I did it).

Don't take the water out. My 75 was aquascaped about 5 times over 4+ years, I finished it with two large islands and a vertical trench between them that almost reached the top of the tank which was fun. Here are some ideas on island formations from my 125... :)
