Any ideas on what kind of wrasse this is? I bought it today, but it's the first time I've seen one.

He is purplish pink with spots of checkerboard pattern on his back.

This was the best picture I could get while he was in the bag. He buried himself as soon as he was released, so if you need better pictures it'll take time.

Thanks!

what was it sold to you as? i have looked at about 150 pics of wrasses with not one even close. :( heres some more http://species.fishindex.com/65 click the text on there. im not 100% sure its a wrasse. may need a better pic once it comes out of the sand. pretty fish though.

Well, I know my leopard wrasse sleeps buried in the sand, but yeah you're right...I haven't been able to find him if he's a wrasse and I've searched a few hundred fish so far...

I appreciate the help :)

the fact he sleeps in the sand is about the only thing that sounds like a wrasse to me LOL. looking at the fins and mouth looks like a Anthias, but again i couldnt find a 100% match.

Here are a few more shots...I couldn't get any decent ones of him because he's more active in the dark and he's timid of the camera flash.

Hope some of these help!

Thanks, it is much brighter and brilliant in color than my camera makes it out to be. He's quite friendly and active so far; I guess it just took him a while to get situated to the halides and all the other fish.

I've searched fishindex.com for wrasses, basslets, anthias and other assorted types of fish and found nothing so far.

Pretty odd.

good lookin fish! it looks similar to one that I saw from the philipines!?!? I am going to look for the thread that I saw it in and if I find it I will post a link!!

Well, the mystery is solved.

I have a juvenile Creole Wrasse.

It was in the Atlas, it's scientific is clepticus parrae.

Thanks for your help!!! :)

I've been told they get about 6-7 inches in captivity on the average; in the wild they tend to be larger. Then again, who knows what information is right. He might grow 12 inches in the first year for all I know.

Right now he is pretty small (2.5"), and she will be upgrading in the near future to keep up with his growth. He is quite a happy fish in the tank and gets along well with the other inhabitants.

stellablu- How is the creole doing? Im interested in some info:

grow fast?
what you feed him?
reef safe?
agressive?

and if you can, post a pic please.

Sorry, I've left the hobby after a nasty tank crash. Unfortunately, all of my fish died in that tank, including the creole.

During the time he lived in my tank, however, I did observe this much.

I hear they get pretty big, but he wasn't in my tank long enough to grow considerably.

I fed him frozen mysis, cyclopeeze and live brine. He really seemed to love the cyclopeeze the most.

He never touched any coral or invert. Never showed interest in feeder ghost shrimp or my peppermints. He wasn't aggressive at all. He hid in the rockwork when he was scared and it took him a few days to start coming out more, then he was swimming alongside all the older fish.

Those pictures above don't do justice to his coloration. He was a lovely irridescent purple with striking checker marks. My flash washed him out.

Unless you plan on upgrading down the road, be wary of their adult size. I couldn't find a lot of info on keeping them in the home aquarium, so I'm afraid that's all I can tell you. Good luck.
