I picked up a couple of these guys from a LFS. They were sold as Gem of the Sea. I've seen them called Eye of the Sea too. I can't seem to find any info on the on the net...scientifc name, where they are collected, etc.

Many Thanks.

No. It's the one of the two in my tank. The one being sold on eB@y is by an online store I think.

I don't think it is a Balanophyllia either. It doesn't look like the images of Balanophyllia I found on the net.

look up Balanophyllia Elegans.. in the pictures you find they will have there feeders out, have you fed yours yet?? i still believe thats what it is.. an owner of a local reef shop i know just got a few of these in his display they are nice..

I forget the correct spelling, but its Rhizotypus or something. Email Anthony @ aquadesignz, he should know the name. HTH.

Hmm, i thought i read they were the same somewhere. I remember Jendub had posted pics of one. I believe Captive Oceans or some other Zeovit site had some for sale a couple of months ago listed as Eye of the Sea, but they weren't cheap, ~$1500 IIRC.

This is the one on sale on ebay, this is the 2nd one that they auctioned off.

Here the 1st auction where the coral was listed as a Balanophyllia - GEM OF THE SEA and then changed to a Rhyzophilia. Auction closed at $300:

You may have to look really hard for a picture of a living specimen, but I think it's a species of Flabellum. Here's a picture of a fossilized skeleton:
