ID request

Sorry, can't get a pic of this fellow at all. He's too small & my camera is only 0.6 megapix :o I recently bought some LR and have seen this guy a number of times in a little cave out the front.

He is approx 1/2" long, black or dark brown stripes across his body (like a bee!). Dominant claw is green. I have to remove him as the tank is destined for seahorses, but I would like to set up a small tank for him and the other non-horse-friendly hitchhikers, so if anyone can give me a possible ID I would be grateful.

Oh, and the rock was collected in NSW, Australia, if that gives you a species range.

Are you sure this is a mantis shrimp. From the coloration and the fact that you mention "dominant claw, it sounds more like a snapping shrimp.

Hi, no I'm not sure at all, which is why I came here! I have had suggestions on another board that he sounds like a pistol, so I guess he is! I am a seahorse person not a shrimp person hehe
