ive been into saltwater for a little while i have a 75 gallon tank about two years old. and i have a seven gallon reef tank that i want to change..... i had no problems taking care of it i just want something new my friend is buying the corals and fish to put in her 55gal. i was thinking of getting two Ocellaris clown fish and an anemone. the tank is about a year old with no problems ever.. tell me how bad or decent idea that would be...

The main problem with a pico-sized tank isn't just the cramped confines; it's the trouble you'll have maintaining consistent water quality--especially with fish that attain 3" or so, like clownfish.

But unless you had your heart set on something more impressive-looking, you might could keep 1 or 2 tiny gobies, like neons or trimmas, and some really nice zoanthids or ricordeas. You could end up with a very colorful tank that way.

Or, while they're not colorful, tank-bred tiger gobies (Elacatinus macrodon) from ORA are fun to watch. They stay very small (about 1-1.5" for males, and about .75-1" for females) and are very lively and entertaining. I have a pair and they're some of my favorite fish I've ever had. Diver's Den offers them for sale periodically in pairs (which is how I got mine). They enjoy lots of live rock to hide in and hop around on, and eat pods, very small pellet foods, Cyclopeez, and mysis shrimp. If you kept them with some colorful ricordea (depending on lighting), you could have a tiny Florida/Caribbean biotope.

You might want to head over to the mantis shrimp board and ask for some advice, if you're still interested in a stomatopod. I'm getting one myself; they're fascinating animals.

Just some ideas. :)

thanks for everyones advice. i guess il have to sleep on it.. i just want somethin different than your average pyramid stack of rocks, i like that biotope idea too!

bluezoo and stomatopod.com both have Gonodactylus smithii mantis shrimp in stock (last i checked, which was a couple days ago). They are extremely interactive and Dr. Roy says an adult is fine in a 5 gallon. Doesn't get much more interesting to watch than that.

My latest Aquapod 12gal find SEEMS like it would be a decent size. Wow!!! After actually looking at it compared to my 58gal, it looks tiny... A spawning set of percs in it will be cramped enough, but I think a 7gal would be a very tight space. My Tomato clowns don't really go more than a 1ft^2 area EVER in the 58gal reef, but I agree it is water quality and not necessarily the size. If they can keep breeder occys and percs in 10 gal tanks, would 3 gal really make a difference if you kept up on water quality??? I don't think so, if you maintained a successful nano-reef. I say do what you please and learn from any experience you have whether it's a mistake or a success....

Let the flaming begin....:fun2:

Except that it's the animals who suffer the consequences if you take that approach and it doesn't work out...them, and your wallet.

Less than 24hrs....:fun4:

I didn't say keep them in their until they die if it doesn't work. Any aquarist has to take that responsibility when getting into this hobby. None of my animals suffer and I wouldn't think twice about trying something that's absurd to the masses. Enough said....

After reading this I think I misinterpreted what you said, and I apologize for that. No offense intended. I'm a little too literal sometimes. :)

BTW, totally agree with your sig file!

No hard feelings at all... I've just learned in this hobby asking almost any question yields 30 different mindsets. Without discussions like this, we could not advance the hobby.

As for the sig...... it's my way of reefing entirely. This mentality needs pushed b/c ff we don't police our actions, the global bans will begin (as they already have)....
