Ideal lighting for clams

We have a 475 gallon reef system and were considering making one of our 8 50 gallon tanks exclusively for clams. What type of light would you recommend for thsi type of set up as well as where should they be ideally placed in the tank. We were considering attaching them to live rock so we can feed them the live phyto that we grow, is this the right decision? I want to have a plan before i order them so that i do not kill them before i get a chance to enjoy them! Any other pointers would be greatly appreciated as well!

Thanks For Your Time,

Vinny! :bum:

250 would be sufficient for all kinds of clams in a 50 gallon tank, i would go with 10K for better spectrum.

Agreed,
250 gives you the ability to keep basicly any clam happy as far as light and placement in a tank under 24" deep.

As far as 10 vs 20k, its really up to you. I think you will like the 10K with possible actinic supplimentation better however, 20K isnt for everyone.

Thank you both very much, now they will stand a fighting chance of surviving once i purchase them! And i have to go buy some new lights!

Thanks Again,

Vinny!

also what you said about placement, depends on the type of clam, derasas are kept on the sandbed, while maximas and croceas are kept on the rock close to the light...
