importance of nutrient import with ulns's

Randy Holmes-Farley, i read in an article that you published that you use water glass to add silica to the aquarium. i did a google on water glass and can't figure out what that actually is and where to get it. you mentioned to dose it for sponges, mollusk but does it have any positive effect on sps, lps in a ulns tank? my phosphate, silicate, and nitrate are all undetectable and some of my corals are colorful while others are light or pale in color, but other wise healthy, so i'm wondering if i need to feed the corals more. i just saw you posting here and answering questions here so i figure i may be able to catch you and hope to get an answer. i know this isn't the forum but my question does include the fact that i think my tank is ulns.

thanks

Randy:
Which form of "water glass" do you prefer? Sodium silicate? There are variations on the water glass sold intot eh concrete mix-design industry that I have access to.

Sodium silicate solution. Here's an example:

I do not think it has any big positive or negative effect on corals, as they do not typically use much silicate.
