Impressed with petco

I agree with everyone that it comes down to the specialist they hire and how well they train the other employees for when the specialist isnt there. The Petco by work has a girl working there who has a 200g reef at home and the guy has a 300 so they seem to know their stuff on their stock. Everyone else at the store knows very little to nothing.

That aside our Petcos in arizona are mixed, some have SW section some dont, and even then it is like 25-40% SW and the rest fresh and live plants. They do have Orchid Dottybacks for 20(and I have a 25% off coupon) so I might grab one when I can actually find one in stock. Their anenome prices arent bad either but all three carpets were sick at the Peoria store, the condy's looked good but I dont want one of those.

I would still definitely QT anything from them, they do have a rep for ICH but I think that is slowly changing as they get more knowledgable people working that section. I also got a 36" actinic T5HO for my light for $4 on closeout and the NLS THera A for $1 on closeout so there are some decent deals to be found if you dont mind stopping by regularly to see what they have. My brother has 3 chromis and a blenny from them and they have been doing great.

This is most interesting. Here in Boston you'd expect that there would be a strong aquarium store somewhere downtown or close by. Well, NOT. It's due to the exorbitant rents. None can stay in business downtown. In Chinatown there is a small freshwater store with discus, arowana, goldfish and koi plus some supplies. In Watertown a similarly small store with mostly freshwater livestock. There's a shop in Newton I have never been to, and then there are 3 PetCo's and one PetSmart inside Rt 128/95. Other than that it's 25 to 50 miles to specialized aquarium stores. The closest one is 15-30% more expensive on dry goods and gear than on line, or at least feels that way, but of course there's no shipping charge. And you can see the livestock.

the two petcos that i have near me are awful.... everytime i go in there the SW fish just look awful.... ich, very skinny and other diseases.. pretty sad

Petco is not that bad they just have a bad rep. Their online has much better prices than Live aquaria or Saltwaterfish.com. I got a healthy 2.5 inch purple tang for under $60 with a promotion they had.
