Hi all, I just wanted to post this thread to see if anyone else has had the same problem and to advise people who have not and do not know.

about four months ago before I built my canope I broke two screens for my MH's I did not think this would matter and did not replace them.

THIS HAS CAUSED ME MASSIVE PROBLEMS....

Fish have been showing all bacterial signs and eventually dying.
The hermits only come out at night,.
The LR looks dead in direct light - amazing behind
The Anenome has crinckled tentacles (burns???)

and many more symptoms that have led me down every path other than lighting.

I hope this helps someone out there and they do not have the stress and heartache I have had for the past four months

Thanks,

Sean

you mean you have no U.V. protection? That's one of the most important things for a Metal Halide. It could seriously damage your own eyes as well.

I don't think it was bacterial growth on the fish. More likely it was the burn from the radiation. U.V. would also kill bacteria.

DE bulbs,

The fish deff have signs of bacterial infection, comes and goes very quick though as you might expect. ich that lasts for a day!!!

I guess my fish will remain ill even though the conditions are perfect, or do you think they will get btter, is there anything that I could do?

They seem a lot happier in their swimming and the LR looks to be greening in colour after only two days, cant wait to finally see coraline on the glass

Def. go to the local glass shop and take the broken glass with you so they can cut you new ones. That can damage YOUR eyes!!!! No joke, don't turn them on one more time until you do this. Obviously you don't want your tank to be dark so stop reading this and go NOW!

Already done, the glass for the main lights has been replaced, lucky for my eyes the only light I was seeing was through the glass so would have had the UV filtered out as is .5" thick.

glad that's fixed.

your fish may have had skin problems from the u.v. which allowed the bacteria to penetrate better.

glad youf ixed the problem, and best of luck to your livestock. hope your eyes are ok in the long run too!

Scared me for a minute, I don't have UV glass shields, but it sounds like I don't need them for my single ended bulbs.

i'd still get U.V. filtering glass / shield =/ i just feel safer that way.

I agree, In my intensive reading on UVA abc's literally! I have read that you are playing with fire without shields as you can't guarantee that the UV coating on the bulbs is sufficient

It's not a coating on the single ends it is the glass, you will cut out too much of the UV you want if you double it. Just don't use broken bulbs.

remember the article where a high school cafeteria's MH bulb broke and threw a bunch of people into the hospital? It scares me enough! I have tempered UV glass over my reflector of my retrofit, and then another U.V. shield for the lighting fixture... my SPS are growing nicely and I can see! =)

I'm just super cautious =/
