I bought it from my LFS on Friday for $50.00 it was looking happy as can be. when i got home it had closed up. I put it in my tank and it still has not opened up. Same thing for the toadstool. Here is a image of it. I dont remember if the brown spots were there before or not. I Phosates are a bit high so i have put in some phosban. other than that everything else is normal parameters. All my other coral are fully opened and happy.
Here is a thumbnail and the full image.

you can see the rest of the tank in my sig.

Leathers almost always have a smell about them though... something almost chemical-y

As for GSP... I've yet to see anybody sucessfully kill the stuff, i've seen people leave rocks coated with the stuff out in the sun for hours, and it still comes back.

Speaking of killing it anyone try putting an aggressive coral near it, like frogspawn or hammer? Would it sting it to kingdom come?

I am happy to say that after brushing off the Cyno the mat is turning purple, I added a extra small powerhead. As of this morning 10% of him is open. I hope this is a good sign.

I will post pics on my webpage tomorrow. I had to redo my page, sorry that images in my origial post are broken. I guess i cannot edit my original post to remove them.

I don't know that it's possible to kill GSP so even though I can't see your pics, I'm sure it will recover. I had a frag that was turned upside down and burried in the sand for over 10 days (I was away on vacation) and it didn't die off. I cleaned it up, tossed it back on the rocks and it opened and began spreading within a couple of weeks.

GSP is a tempermental basstaad. When I first aquired mine, it took 3 weeks before it opened up. Every time I frag it, it gets upset and won't open for a few days. My leather gets the same way except it took a full month when first aquired to open up, I truly thought it was dead. When they are not ticked off, they look like a bunch of hippies with their long polyps swaying about:)

This is so strange, My GSP HATE high flow. Anytime I move a rock they are on, I HAVE to make sure it is not in direct flow of a fan. Otherwise they will close up and not open. If they are behind some rocks to where they do not get direct flow, they open up nice and big.

I will have to test that with mine satan, presenty they are in the middle of the tank so it gets flow from bothsides. Since it just started opening I now know it is alive I will move it to a low flow place and see if that makes them open more.

Not to hijack but does anyone else have GSP with a white matting? I have one little patch i got from one person with the purple mat and very "neon" yellow/green polyps and it grows slow.

Then I have a patch that has white matting, longer stalks and tentacles more light green and grows like an effing weed.

Just a different variation of the same stuff?

my matting has changed in colors from, white to brown, to purple and it is not uniform. Some areas are purple, some are brown and some are wite. My mat is solid about 4-5 inches x 2-3 inches.

From what i am learning about these guys is they are very intresting and do lots of stuff. I really thought mine was dead, and one day POP it stated to open. It is still only 10% opened.

Wierd. I've had mine for a few months, went from 1"x 2" to a good 5"x5" in a short amount of time. Still white matting but spreading so must be happy.

i have mine in a dimmed part of my tank. should i move him to a brighter spot. i have a220 that is 6ft long and i have 2 250 watt MH on the tank each one covering a 2 ft area on the tank, so the center is less lit, thats where the star polyp is. stay or move??
