Is Nikon D70 worth $130 more over D50 ?

I just saw this and was curious what people with experience with these cameras thought.

I know if you keep saying "Well for $$ more you can get.... " LOL but from what I saw the D70 didn't seem to have a very significant difference that I could see. But this is coming from a total newb so I don't know.

I found the D70 at a price of $629 +free shipping if you take the 8-10 day shipping ( which I could not do for excitement and impatience :) )
This price is just body only and the D50 was $499 body only. These are also brand new not refurbs.

I plan to buy me a new camera in about 6 days and the Nikon 28-200 lens so I just want to make sure I get whats good now cause it will be a while before I get another.

If it's the D70, don't do it...that camera had all kinds of bugs in the firmware that couldn't be fixed.

Nikon released the D70s to replace it...be sure you get the "s" if you decide to go that way.

As for whether the D70s would be worth the extra $, I don't know...need to get a Nikon owner to chime in. I only know about the D70 bug thing because a Nikon owner warned me about it when I was thinking of going DSLR.

I ended up with a Konica Minolta 7D, which is in the next class of camera above the D70s or D50...not that this is relevant to your question.

My boss has the D50 and is quite happy with it. He does mostly sports photography of his kids....baseball, football, etc. I've seen some of his pics and they're quite nice.

Good luck with your decision.

well i need to see if I have a d70s or d70 I thought just the d70 and have not had a single problem in almost 2 years?? I love the camera. I though one of the main differences the the d70's ability to take 3 pic a sec and the 50 can't. I could be wrong?

It could also be that you're not trying to do the same things my fried was with her D70 so you might be experiencing the bugs. But like I said, I'm not the expert on the Nikons, I was advised to stay away from the 70D because of bugs.

If your experiences have been positive and bug-free, I stand corrected.

1 thing

1 thing

the only bad thing I have ever heard about the camera was that some people bought cheap non-nikon batteries from china that could explode.

The D70 will run the exact same firmware as the D70s. You just have to download it and install it from the nikon website.

Soo, probably not really worth the extra money? I don't think I would be needing the faster speed shots. Don't plan to do action photos.

My choice with the D50 or 5D. Sony has the worst customer service of any major brand on the planet.... they just purchased Minoltas camera interests. I opted not to get stuck with Sony or a defunct lens system. This left me with a choice between the D50 and D70. I chose the D50 and opted to spend money on the lenses knwing by the time I outgrew the D50 I would outgrow the D70 as well. With a good lens system, better bodies are just a "upgrade" when the times comes.

You make a good point BeanAnimal.

I like the price of the D50 which does help me in being able to purchase a better lens when I buy the body.

Thanks for the help all

both are excellent cameras... one of the things i dont like about the D50 is that it only takes SD cards where all other DSLRs take CF/MD media. So if you get the D50 and you decide a few years down the line to get the D200, you will be buying all new storage media which is kind of a bummer.

Memory is rather cheap, so that did not bother me. The D50 does not have DOF preview, but then again most of the time it makes the viewfinder to dark to see anything anyway.

Aural, I thought that more and more cameras were to have SD cards instead of CF in the near future.

BTW, I had a bag full of minolta lenses... and still jumped ship and sold them and the film body (for the reasons I stated above). If I ever need a film body again, Iwill buy a used Nikon F series.

I just bought D50 for $530.00 with 2 lens outfit.

Difference between D70s and D50 is...

D50 doesnt have these...
DOF viewer - this is a big factor for pro user
Mirror lock - for long exposures and "B" setting
2.5 fps against 3fps on D70
ittl transmitter for flash
only one dial jog

But I still chose D50 because some good features or improvements against D70s. And also for the price.

I honestly don't know many folks that use the DOF preview. Many times it creates a dark image in the view finder... to dark to see the DOF anyway. Secondly, I think most pros pretty much now the DOF for their lenes at different f-stops. At least that's kinda what I always figured.

The mirror lockup is nice and something that weighed heavily in my decision but was not worth the extra money to me for just that feature.

The other featers were just not that important to me for my first DSLR... maybe next time.

I think you will enjoy the D50, I sure have so far.

I purchased from a local RITZ camera. I would trust DELL as well. I would not trust many (if any) of the ebay or other online vendors for this equipment. I do buy almost everything on the internet and eBay, just not NEW camera equipment or other high maintenance or warranty dependent items.

BagedTaco.

I bought mine from Ebay. they have very good review from ebay, and some people here from RC have high recommendations about them.

I bought mine as factory demo. But I could have bought the brand new ones...

Either way... they still have the cheapest either brand new or factory demo.

I dont think you can beat a brand new D50 with two lens outfit for 600.00 plus lots of extras.

Since both the brand new one and the factory demo has one year warranty, I took chance on the factory demo since it came from nikon also. The only diff is I need to send it to Cameta and not nikon the make use of the warranty. But thats ok.

Still better than used ones that are being sold out in Ebay.

Also i like the store, because they actually spell it out on their website what is and what's not included. I like that, no surprises.

Hope this helps. Mine will arrive tomorrow tuesday. I cant wait.

You can not send it to Nikon, because they have likely blacklisted the serial number. This means that you can't run down to a Nikon deal and drop it off. It also means you are relying on the word of Cameta and that fact that they will be in business next week. You are also bound by "their" warranty, not Nikons. This company may be wonderful, so I will reserve my opinion.

Please let us know how your transaction turns out :)

For people reading this:
A word of caution about electronics vendors on eBay:

Many of the eBay dealers either misrepresent the equipment included or send refurbs or grey market items as new.

There is no problem with such a purchase as long as you are aware of the possible pitfalls. As I stated, I choose to buy cameras from a local store for those reasons. I buy just about everything else online (a lot of it from ebay).

A common practice is to send defective equipment then charge extra for an RMA and "testing", only to be told there unit was working and you have to pay extra to get it back or a restocking fee if you don't want it. If you decide to play along, they then send a WORKING item to you and sell the "broken" item to the next unwitting customer. They may only do this to 1-10 or less sales or so, but it is very lucrative and very hard to prove (unless you track serial numbers, which most end users do not).

This is one of a dozen scams that happen thousands of times a day with online sales. Be warned that eBay has no interest to stop the practice or help you get your money bacl. Also be warned that their feedback and rating system is designed to somewhat mask (protect) these shady vendors.

There are a LOT of honest people and companies that trade on eBay, but there are as many or MORE that are dishonest.
