is sand blaster sand OK for reef??

I bought my sand from a company that sells brick and cement construction products. I bought the sand that looked white, I do not know if it is for sandblasting or for making light colored grout, but it has worked fine for me for the last three years. What I liked about getting this sand is that it is cheap, about $5 a bag, so when I clean my tank I just suck some of it up and do not care.

Just a word of caution... silica sand / sandblasting sand dust is very bad for you lungs. Try to handle it wet as much as possible to keep from breathing any of it in.

Fish stores usually carry white sand, I just didn't know if what newbie2004 was looking at is silica.

fsn77 what you're referring to is called silicosis. It supposedly happens when you breathe in "way too much" dust all the time when sand blasting. When you blast with silica the sand tends to practically disintegrate creating much dust. Most states have outlawed silica for blasting which is a big bummer since only an idiot would breathe it in when heââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s blasting. Itââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s cheaper than dirt too (pun intended).
