Is there some coral on my LR?

I just set up my 2.5 oh, is it three days now? Well, the guy at the lfs said it might cycle very fast since it is so small.

The first thing I found was I guess a little leather coral, which is good because that is what I can do, light wise? (15 watt 10k/actinct 50/50). I've watched it a bit and it is light sensitive, motion sensitive, and doesn't like a blasting current.

Then I found a dead old piece of coral I'd chosen (thinking it would look cool and be very beneficial to the tiny bacterial critters with all the little holes, pores, you know) was alive. It is definitely sticking itself out looking for food. It is less light sensitive (the "feelers" stayed out after I'd turned the lights out and looked with a red light), likes more flow than the leather and is probably an sps? The piece is shaped like a spool and most of it is dead, there's a little strip of reddish purple on the edge which goes all the way down the "body" of the object.:eek1:

Whoa, and then I saw this little tiny feather duster. It can't be more that an 8th inch. It is red. It is on the side (less well lit area of the lr).

There is something in there big enough to swosh the sand that I heard when I was setting up the tank. Haven't heard or seen that since but I'll bet it's still there...

So, what do I feed the corals and when do I start. The sps is finding something as it does seem to have a bit of ditritus when it is closed. I'd like to do the best thing for these little things. My own personal rule seems to have been broken with the little fringe of sps, never buy anything that isn't safe in the tank (requirement wise, etc.). Does this bit have a chance? Why would it die down to the edge anyway? Is that what happens to coral when it gets into the collection of LR and gets "missed" on the "check for corals"? Any ideas?

water test

water test

Ok. I'll have to work on the pictures. I just did a water test:

PH-I can't read those well
Nitrate-10
Nitrite-25
Ammonia-50

I hope this is my spike. I did two 25 % water changes over an hour. It didn't seem to help the ammonia level. I tested the nitrates and nitrites after the wc.

water changes won't speed up the cycle... you should let it sit... when your ammonia goes down to zero, and then the nitrItes go up, then down... you're close to the end. then when nitrAtes go up, that's what you can help with a water change.

oh,ok.

oh,ok.

:)

Ok, here I thought I coould bring down the ammonia by doing a wc. I think I was testing in the middle of an ammonia spike. Tonight I measured it and it read .1 What a relief. I didn't test the nitrates. I'll look at that tomorrow.

It is scary to think what those little critters go through. I just want to make it as easy for them as I can.

Is it leather corals that tend to shoot out poison? To keep their "territory"?

You are enjoying the experience of uncured live rock. Kind of like Forrest Gump said, you never know what you are going to get. Sounds like you have lots of critters on this peice. There are often sponges and macro, worms, tiny crustacians and dead stuff that can get toxic. Just keep up the water changes and filtering and make sure you have a stable system before you put any fish in.
If you haven't already, check out the new to the hobby threads on this site and also on Wetwebmedia.com, a great source of information. Read up on curing live rock and especially on the quarantine process. Anything wet gets 4 weeks QT before enteing the display tank. Yep, you need another tank, welcome to the hobby! ;~)

another tank lol

another tank lol

MandM, Thanks for posting. I think I'll visit the library tomorrow. I have been reading up a bit but I think it's time to really dig in.

I have one of those diy refugiums drying/curing right now. That silicon is pretty smelly. I'm hoping that smell won't get into the water and kill anything. I really like the live rock. I am supposed to put some of it into the refugium. It will be hard to choose what goes in where I can't see it.

I'm thinking of putting mirrors around the tank so I can see more.

That second tank sounds intreaging especially after seeing some of the things people have done, like the reef wall. I think this tank will become my quarantine tank eventually. But for now the fish can wait. There are so many critters to look at that it's ok.

I'm just wondering if those feather dusters will grow much. They are so small. There are several different colors. It would be nice if they were bigger, or could get bigger.

Once the silicone is completely cured (48hrs) the smell will be gone. Then just rinse and it's safe for fish. You won't regret waiting for fish, it gives your reef time to get some tiny critters established that would otherwise get wiped out by fish. Wetwebmedia.com is a great site. If you like books as well, get "The Concientious Marine Aquarist" by Bob Fenner. He also co-authored with Anthony Calfo , "Reef Invertabrates". Great books. You will never go wrong following advice from either of these guys. The Pocket Expert series are also very good, one on marine fishes and one on marine inverts.
The feather dusters that usually come on live rock don't get very big but they are nice to watch.

Start saving, you thought kids were expensive! ;~)

kids expensive?

kids expensive?

lol. Right! I'm already trying to move into a 5 gallon. Well, it would be better , right? It still fits my available space. After my tank cycles will I cause it to cycle again if I move everything to a 5 gallon?

On the refugium, the rocks I got for it have "stuff" on them that I'd like to keep visible. How much lr should I have in an ac 70 refugium and can I add a dsb without too much of a problem? I'm going to cycle again aren't I...

pictures?

pictures?

Ok, I'll try posting some pictures.
maybe this is my pink leather coral?

Hopefully, the tank? bad angle but for now...

It worked!

Looks like some type of SPS. Cannot tell if it is just skelton with pink algae on it, or the pink is some of the remaining tissue color.

could it really be an sps?

could it really be an sps?

Wow, I've got to get to the library. This thing seems soft as it curls up and even flops around a little. I guess I didn't realise they could be like that. It has little tiny feelers at the end of each appendage...An sps eh? oh boy.

You know, that was part of my problem identifying it. I had gone back to the LFS today and he had a tiny piece of the same thing in one of his tanks. (I gotta wonder if hefound more and took it out of his lr after I called, lol.) I asked the guy that seems like he knows what he's doing (not just selling) and he told me thats what it was. So I checked it out online. Here's a sight where it's just like mine:

Maybe here's another better picture:

I'm not sure how big these are, but Mine is pretty small. I think it must be what it is maybe?

Here's the one I was looking for!

I think this is it from the pictures and from what the LFS fella said. What do you think?

flash of orange!

flash of orange!

Oh, that reminds me, I had posted about hearing the sand go "swosh" when I was setting it up when nothing I was doing was near the sand.

Tonight right after I put two drops of that liquid plankton into the tank I was (as usual:rollface: ) staring at the LR when there was a flash of bright orange in one of the holes on the LR.

What could this possibly be? To survive a cycle and be so brightly colored? Anyone have any clue?

Oh, I saw some kind of worm surface briefly from the bottom layer. I suppose it was a little bristle worm. It was about 1 inch long and had many, many "legs". He crawled slowly feeling his way around about an inch of area and went back down. He was a more muted orange with a dark (what looked like) stomach in the end showing through his skin. You know, the tail end.
