What's the major difference between a tree and a door knob? They're so different! Seriously, they both take pictures, obviously. An SLR has removable lenses and a lot more control and customization. They are very different beasts. While the SLR has a ton more capability, perfectly good pictures can be had with a point-n-shoot, and a photographer can make a mess in a hurry, if he doesn't know what he's doing with the SLR.
As for your questions, I've never used the S2, but have seen good reviews. I'm sure someone will chime in with more experience.
I have the S2 IS and I'm getting alittle better at using it.
It takes some really good shots once you get to know all the settings. It's my first real decent camera so I have a lot to learn yet.
I wouldn't hesitate on buying it again. I just didn't think I needed a 'pro' camera like an SLR considering the price and what I use it for. (non-business)
