Is this normal?

Is it normal to be able to look through the opening and see right through the clam where the foot should be? I recently moved the clam because it was severely gapping. I found about seven little snails under it. So I placed it on the rocks and noticed I could see plain as day through it.

im not sure but i think the opening is ok but those snails if they look like rice are most likely pyramid snails and are eating your clam. so at night check out your clam and if you see them, take out the clam and clean him of the snails and check him every week for more. when you get new clams make sure you clean them first, also if you have turbo snails check them too.

Your clam is in real trouble. There could be more than one problem.

You need to get rid of all those pyramid snails. After your lights have been off for an hour or 2 take the clam out and put him in a bowl of tank water. Check every inch of the clam for even the smallest snails and get rid of them! This has to be done again and again over days/weeks. There are probably hundreds of those snails in your tank if you aqre finding multiple ones on your clam.

Are you feeding live phyto? Clams need to be fed appropriate food, especially if they are under 3 inches.

Last, what type of clam is it, and what kind of lights do you have?

I've been pull those pyramid snails off for about a week now. The last few nights I haven't found any. I have a Squmosa it's about 5 inches. I have 390 watts of PC lighting. I feed DT's every other day. Today it looks really sick. The entire clam is pulled back into its shell. I recently got rid of my flame angel cause he was picking at the mantle and the clam won't open. It did well again for a few days then almost over night everything went down hill.

Sounds like your lighting is fine for him. Glad you're feeding DTs!

But, the presence of a Flame Angel for a period of time, plus pyramid snails is more than adaquate to stress a clam to death :(

Do your best to take care of him.. I hope he pulls through!

Well, last night I found what I believe to be a Buccinid Whelk coming from inside the clam. I'm guessing it was the cause.
