JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

Have any of you had problems with the lights? I bought my wife one and the lights burnt up. I am wondering if I should give it another shot or just trade for a biocube when I get the new one.

What is everyone using for a skimmer. I want to replace my Tunze so I can have my main chamber back. It looks like I am going to need a hand on solution. Any feedback would be great!

I use a tunze DOC 9002. I added a sump/fuge that sits directly behind the tank. It also contains a return pump that runs through my chiller before it gets to a new return I added in the main DT section.

Here's my fuge.

nanonubey, can you please please take a clearer photo of the area you drilled to create the connection to bring water to the sump. I want to do this sometime in the future but have no idea about this. Would appreciate a brief explanation as to how it all works. Thanks.

Sahin, I will post some better pictures and give a quick how to lesson tomorrow for you when I have more time.

Wmtasker, I have the Reef Keeper Elite controller with rkm net, rkm sl1,(2) rkm pc4's , ph, orp, temp, probes and plan on getting the salinity one soon and one more pc4. I just got the set up so as far as upkeep I don't know yet, but calibrations were pretty easy just have to make sure the probe comes with the calibration solution and order it if it dose'nt.

Nanonubey, Great setup. I 'd also like a better idea of how you drilled for the sump. Do you have a siphon break?

My tank has been broken down for 6 months while I work on the new house, I'd love to add a true sump before I get it back up and running.

Here's the 1" bit I ordered from Harbor Freight for five bucks. The hole for a 1/2" bulkhead needs to be 1 1/8" so you have to ream the hole with the drill bit in the hole. <a href="http://tinypic.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i45.tinypic.com/314otvn.jpg" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic"></a>
Here's the jig I made with a scrap piece of baseboard, the measurements are from the back of the tank and from the bottom of the plastic trim piece on the top of the tank. <a href="http://tinypic.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i50.tinypic.com/rwmof5.jpg" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic"></a>
This is from the inside of the tank, notice that the plastic trim plate goes deeper than on the outside so you have to cut it. I stuck the bulkhead in and traced the outline then removed the fitting and cut it using a utility knife that I heated up with a micro torch. Looks a little ruff but was very quick and I did'nt have to worry about cutting the glass like you would with a dremel tool. Plus I don't have a dremel. :sad2:

Im going to change the 90 on the bulkhead to a tee to vent. I'm also going to try a loop vent like you would see under a kitchen sink that's in a island to see if I can make it silent. But that will be hard because of the return pump fitting will probaly hit it.

I have gotten my LED 28 nano up and running for almost 2 weeks now. I have one MJ 1200 running and one stock pump. Two 1200 were too much for the tank unless I make modifications to the back overflow. As someone else mentioned, maybe even several times, the Tunze 9002 skimmer fits (barely) in the middle chamber, but I have my reservations about keeping it in there since flow cannot be that good with such a tight fit. Therefore I may elect to opt for a HOB CPR fuge of sorts and place the 9002 in there with some Cheato. BTW, I really enjoy the LED version. LED's are very bright providing the necessary Wt for corals with the shimmer effect, greener, and the duration (life of bulbs) is a nice bonus. It will cost more up front, but from the sounds of LED you will make up the cost and them some in the long run.

Mine has been running for weeks now in a half a$% setup manner. My leather frag that suffered trauma has come back to life and is starting to heal and grow a bit.

I agree with JJim with the long term savings. As for LED tech......... its great they don't influence the water temp what so ever. I keep my house at 65 and I have been dialing in the temp to get the perfect 79. Coral growth is noticeable in two weeks.
