I was looking into my tank and was quite stunned to notice a black nudibranch gliding across a rock. I havent added anything to the tank in about 2 or 3 months :eek2: so it must have been in there for awhile. I was thinking about taking him out, but then had second thoughts about it and didnt want to kill such a magnificant creature if it was un-necessary. I was wondering if anyone could Id it from these photos i took (im sorry about the low quality) and if it is harmful for my tank. Thanks

It looks like a Scutus, a black limpet.

I've always heard mixed reviews. Some say they never harm a coral and go only for algae, some have seen them taking a nibble are their corals. In my Reef Inverts book they not them as not the most trustworthy because they can graze on corals.

It's a Scutus. I have about 6 in my tanks. They are about 2+ inches in size. Have never bothered any of my coral. Have had them for almost 2 years now.

That's cool, most people would want a nudibranch in their tanks
Send it to me if you don't want it :)

thanks for the info. If it dies, is it going to tox out my tank?

I'm not sure. It is not a cuke, so I do not think so.

PS-- They are very tough to get off glass, ect. They were all in my 100gal once. Must have came in on one of my purchases. Took a while to spread them around to my other tanks. THEY REALLLLY STICK TO GLASS!
