I figured I'd just buy what I want and give it to my wife to wrap. That way I don't have to worry about her buying the wrong thing. Lol

I just picked up a brand new Canon T3i with the standard 18-55mm lens and the 75-300mm macro usm lens, 16gb card, tri pod, and a bundle of other stuff for $719 shipped. Got it on ebay, but it is from a canon dealer so its warrantied.

Hopefully that was a good price on a decent camera. I spent a few weeks researching but have never had anything besides a basic point and shoot and I don't really have a great understanding of all the camera lingo. I saw quite a few threads here specifying the set up and it seems to be capable of what I'm looking for so we'll see, come xmas...

What is everyone planning to buy themselves for xmas?

Well Merry Xmas !! That sounds great. Post some pics when your ready.

I'm buying myself a bottle of JW Blue to enjoy in front of my tank !!

No funds for gifts this year, just good food and time with my girlfriend for the holidays / my birthday. All I need.

Sounds like a great camera you've got there.

pretty much the same here. food, family and spending time with my love.
my bday is in December also.

But if we had to ask for something, it would be to get our upgrade to 180g done for Xmas. LOL. (not likely until after the Holidays, but one can dream)

Awesome another camera in the club! That camera is capable I have the t5i it's almost the same as the t3. I think your 75-300 is a zoom lens. Here's a good website to help you understand the terminology and how the camera works.

I'm hoping to get a macro lens, remote shutter and tripod.

All I wanted for Xmas was a tablet and my wife picked it up already so I'm a happy camper. I'm also a December baby so I'll have to see if I get any surprises for my birthday also, lol.

Iv'e always wondered what type of camera takes the amazing pics I see on this forum. Is there a camera that takes good pics that are less expensive?

Thanks for the link I'll be spending some time on it.

I've been looking around in the photography section but I have to admit I know almost nothing about cameras. I kind of just went with what I found that was some what affordable that I saw some good pictures taken with. I thought I got the kit with decent lenses but if I need another lens in the future to do better then maybe I'll save up a bit. I saw the canon ef 100mm lens suggested many times over, but its about $400 by itself.

Your 18-55 will definitely get good pics, all my recent pics were shot with a 18-135 and I thought they came out good. The minimum focus distance is 12" so you'll have to be that far away for it to be a good shot. I think I took about 500 pics before I figured out how to get good ones. Shooting in raw and adjusting white balance in Lightroom is kinda necessary unless your tank lights are 12k. Your welcome to bring it over I might be able to help you some but that cannon website explains it best.

Country Bob the canon powershot d10 is a great camera that can handle the blue lighting of our tanks and do macro shots. I had one and Ryan just posted a bunch of pics from his. Just don't trust the floating wrist strap in the ocean it can unsnap.
