keeping baby clams

Sue T posted a reply on another thread about how to keep baby clam. I have also been doing this for the past 6 months and so far haven't lost one. I am taking about clams that are 1" to 2" I put some of my tank water in a small container and put a little DT's in it for about 30 -45 minutes to feed. I also dose my tank with DT but want to make sure the baby is getting enough.

Thanks for sharing that Sue. :)

Barry, Hi and I'm glad you posted this here. I was only relaying the knowledge that I gained from Jim Norris in the little bit of time I had at his house. I would love to spend more time learning more about clams from him. The Knop book is ok for reading but me, I learn hands on.

I really makes so much sense if you think about it. The baby clams are not yet ready to make the switch to light for food so that has to be supplemented with live food. If you want them to live you have to make the effort.

I agree with you whole heartly. I also loves this guy and spending a little time with them to survive is really worth time invested. I have not at the present a 1 1/2 Ultra Grade max. and it is really looking good. He seems to love the DT's as his mantle really extend after feeding. :)

Hi--Sue and Barry,
It is really amazing that it can be so simple.
By the way one of babies has turned color on me. Over the last 3 months I have been watching this little guy gain about 1/3 inch! He was a dark dark blue---but he is turning into a black max with with white tiger stripes. This picture was taken a couple mins. ago. The MH have been of for one hour.
check him out!
Jim

Jim- here is that blue Maxima that I got from you and he has changed since then also. I like him better now that he has changed. Go figure:D

OK George,
It did change color! I like it more now too! I think I want it back!!!!
I am so glad you like it!
Jim

Dt's

Dt's

Ok don't laugh , Where do you get dt's for clam supplimentation?
I am not really new to the hobby but have never added any and REALLY LOVE CLAMS.. I have had some larger ones but would love to get some smaller ones too. I have 400W MH 6500K Iwasksi's with true blue pc's for suppliment..I live in central Wisconsin and the local store that has any corals is about 2 hours away.. Online ordering would be my best bet..Since they are alive I How are they kept? THe dt's that is. and Jim Do u ship clams? I Am cycling a 65 gallon for clams and sps only as I type

Since we are showing off our babies. This pic was taken from the top of tank looking into the water. I never knew this clam was so pretty. :)

Too Much current?

Too Much current?

This is what was recommended by an online store for my 65 gallon..I stil think it might be a bit much but I ordered it and have it running..A rio3100 around 700gph at 4ft head and a 3/4" sea swirl..I don't want dead spots but I also don't want to blow stuff out of the water..It is going into a sump/refugium appr 30 gallons with an overflow.

biggdriver,

I don't think that will be too much as I am turning my tank 31 times a hours. That is 5,580gph but we my SPS I need lots of current. I just have to be careful where to place clams. You may have to place things accordingly. IMO
