There seems to be little chemistry dialog in regards to water clarifiers. I am hoping to get some scientific input about these bottles, the good, the bad and how safe are they.
I currently have a 225 mixed reef (mostly SPS) with sugar fine oolite sand. My tank is not super cloudy but more often than not there is a slight haze to the water. I run 2 cups of ROX carbon which is changed every 2 weeks. I also have 2 sponges which I rinse out every week during maintenance.
I have thought about picking up a diatom filter but I am looking into other options.
Here is the info on a couple products I was looking into:
Clarity
Product Description
Clarityâ„¢ is the ultimate clarifier for both fresh and saltwater. It employs an advanced polymeric flocculating agent that is both reef and plant safe. Clarityâ„¢ is the only clarifier on the market that does it all! Clarityâ„¢ will clear all types of clouding including, but not limited to, chemical clouding and particulate clouding (i.e. stirred up gravel bed). Freshwater and Marine. Plant and reef safe.
Sizes: 100 mL, 250 mL, 500 mL, 2 L, 4 L, 20 L
Why It's Different
Many companies manufacture multiple products to clear up each type of cloudiness and each different environment (e.g. freshwater, marine, reef, etc.). Some companies have developed products that will clear most types of cloudiness, but their application requires two separate bottles of product. Clarity contains compounds that will clear all types of cloudiness in all environments. Clarity contains both precipitating and flocculating agents in the same bottle, enabling all types of cloudiness to be removed in one dose.
How it Works
A simulation of Clarity'sâ„¢ flocculating agent at work. Once tiny particles of matter have clumped together, it is a simple matter of mechanical filtration to remove the residue.
Upon adding Clarityâ„¢ to the water, you will see a cloudy haze begin to form. This is normal and means that Clarityâ„¢ is beginning to work.
The water is filled with tiny pieces of floating matter that were not visible to the naked eye. Clarityâ„¢ makes those pieces of matter begin to clump together. As they clump together they form larger peices of matter that are now visible, hence the cloudiness. Once this matter has clumped together, it is a simple matter of mechanical filtration to remove the residue. Matter that was once too small to get caught in filter media is now in large enough clumps.
Directions
Use 1 capful (5 mL) for every 80 L (20 gallons*). In some situations the cloudiness may increase slightly after adding Clarityâ„¢, however this is normal and is a sign that Clarityâ„¢ is actively working. Rapid clarification will follow. In the case of chemical or particulate clouding clean filter filter floss or cartridge after tanks clears. (Note: The 2 & 4 L container's cap is 10 mL)

Pro-Clear Marine Clarifier
Produces & Maintains Crystal Clear Water
KENT MARINE PRO-CLEAR MARINE CLARIFIER clears cloudy water from water changes, chemical reactions and disturbed detritus. Quickly attracting these particles so they can be easily filtered out or will settle to the aquarium bottom.
Directions
Shake well before using. Dilute one drop per gallon or 5 ml (1 tsp) per 50 gallons of aquarium water in a separate clean container and evenly disperse around the aquarium. Particles should begin to precipitate out of water within 6 to 8 hours. A properly working mechanical filter using a fine filtering medium will collect particles and can be easily discarded. Allow 8 hours before siphoning. Repeat in 24 hours if necessary. If the tank is extremely cloudy, double the dose but do not use more than two doses per week. Do not use in freshwater.
KENT Marine Pro-Clear is not an algaecide and will have no effect on hair or slime algae.
To prevent cloudy water avoid overcrowding, do not overfeed fish, perform regular water changes and maintain sufficient filtration and water circulation.
Use KENT Marine Poly Ox if tank is cloudy from being overloaded by dissolved organic matter in the system. Then, wait 24 hours before using this product.
