I've been thinking about getting one for my 12g tank to help clear up some hair algae and to add another little creepy crawler to my tank. I've read that they will often clean out a tank of all hair algae then essentially starve to death - is there any truth to that? I would think it would be even more likely to happen considering how small my tank is.

My other option is to simply take a tooth brush to the hair algae, but that's not nearly as much fun.

They can and will eat themselves out of algae. More importantly though, they can and will find themselves in the inlet of any powerhead without foam covering ;)

In this case, you could call the power head a salad shooter :D
