Do a search for H. reidi here in the bay area as there used to be a guy who bred them (I think he was on the peninsula). He may or may not still be around but it's worth a check.
You may also consider buying online from a breeder rather than buying through a store. Aside from the fact that these are increasingly uncommon in the wild, there are all sorts of nasty things on them that come in with the wild (I'm almost certain any that you buy in the LFS will be wild unless they have a line on a local breeder). Also, the wild ones are notoriously difficult to get to eat, and you cannot easily tell how emaciated they are in the store, or how long they have been there (i.e., their internal structure hides their condition really well, as you can tell from the dried ones you see in curio stores). A healthy, captive raised one will take frozen food readily and save you lots of time, effort, and expense. In then end you will be far better off buying an $80 CB one that is known to eat rather than taking a risk on a few $30 ones.
One other hint - check out the various species available and be selective in your choice. There's only one or two species that are truly suitable for tropical tanks, and several of the species require cooler water or else there will be problems with bacterial infections and other diseases.
If you haven't done so already, check out
www.seahorse.org which is a great resource for seahorse information (I think you can also find breeders there as well).
