Going to do some shore diving off La Jolla Cove in a couple weeks. While in San Diego, I'd like to check out one or two LFS. Can anyone recommend the good ones there?

I don't know about the LFS, but please post about the diving! I've never dove there before and have wanted to.

I would also like to know if anyone knows of any good lfs in san diego, I am going there this weekend and would like to check some out. I have went to one there before and it was really bad, no selection and overpriced.

octopus gardens -- The owners name is Ron BEWARE he will talk your ear off about fish and coral. But in his defense he is real knowledgeable and helpfull.

that cool there is one any one know any more store what about the price on the dive and what kind of scenery will de there like reef of just fish or what

I am in Point Loma in SD right now :) I always go to pet Kindgom because it is so close to where I stay... but there are some very good ones here.

I'm going on a guided shore dive right from La Jolla cove - 4:1 ratio. It is supposed to be about a three hudred yard snorkel out and the depth is shallow at about 45ft (good bottom time). Of course it is a kelp bed. Life is to include garibaldi, lobster and some pretty big groupers, among other things. You only get one dive in per morning, so I am also doing night dives as well. The cost per dive is $70 including a 7mil wet suit and tank (I own everything else). The shop I chose can be found at www.scubasandiego.com They come well recommended. I'll post some bad pics and give more detail after I get back, if anyone is interested.

Just got back from vacation. Did a couple shore dives right off La Jolla cove. The swim out wasn't bad at all, and depth was about 30 feet, so we got some good bottom time.

The site was mostly rocky bottom with a variety of algae, including stands of kelp. Surge was minimal at depth. Vis was about 15 feet - certainly no Carribean dive. Saw lots of little fish I cannot ID, Garibaldi of course, a few sea hare, and some sheeps head crab that are surprisingly large. I'd recommend it to any diver who understands the need to get in the water if they are at the ocean.

I only found one LFS - Octopus Gardens. I'd compare it to Pets Inc. without the freshwater and other pets. The majority of the tanks were OK, but he did have a top-down view SPS/clam tank that looked quite good. He must have just gotten a shipment of clams, becaue he had all types in many sizes and they looked quite healthy.

The owner asked me how good our shops were in Phoenix. I told him we had several good ones and lots of avid reefers here. He then surprised the heck out of me by referring to us Phoenicians as "rich" and able to afford this hobby. He went on to explain that CA housing pretty much sucks the life out of many people's expendable income there, so not lots of people can afford reefs in the living room. Kinda' blew me away - I always though the CA people had everything. Guess Phoenix 'aint so bad after all.
