lfs new policy?

I heard a lfs will base percentage off on shopping customers no more ill buy a 5.00 frag and get ten percent. they say if you are are regular shopper you may get up to 20 percent but are tired of the club members shoping for a ten dollar coral and asking for a discount.

Sometimes the LFS can not discount an item because they are selling it at a low profit margin. If I have developed a relationship with the LFS and I am looking for a discount I don't get upset with them if they tell me that they are unable to discount a product. I must look at the whole relationship and wether or not they give me a discount most of the time I purchase products from them. Just realize that your buying relationship goes past a single purchase and part of getting special pricing has to do with the support you give the store and the service you get in return, which is more than just pricing. They also need to make a profit in order to pay their bills. If I don't like a price I don't always purchase the item. We have the choice to wait and see if (as in the case of livestock) it may come in at a later date at a lower price. Or in the case of dry goods you can shop the other stores. You may find another LFS received the item at a lower price and is therefore selling at a lower price. At any rate it is your relationship with the LFS that helps you receive discount pricing. The main reason we get discount pricing as club members has to do with the club relationship. Our club supports the LFS and they have in return supported us. I think that they have done a wonderful job of supporting us even if it is not a perfect relationship.

That's interseting. I've never run into that at all.

I know Atlantis starting giving me the club discount before I even joined the club. I even told Robert one time that I wasn't a member "yet" and he still gave me the discount. Since then I have joined. I have only had one encounter, No....Make that 2 where I have not received a discount.

The first was at Ocean Reef when he had a fish mispriced and I jumped all over it. When Mike Rang me out he realized the price was posted wrong and apologized but said he could not give the disount off that but did honor the price that was posted. So I still got a nice discount off what it should have been priced.

The second was very recent at Rob's Reef when I bought a $75.00 return pump because mine quit. I was told by the gentleman that rang me up that the club discount only applies to Livestock and not to Drygoods. First time I have heard that but I needed the pump badly so I still bought it.

I think that is because the smaller LFS don't make very much profit off of the dry goods... they can't order them in bulk like Petsmart and saltwaterfish.com... so if they gave you a discount on those..they might actually lose money...

Not sure where you were jinjax, but I could understand the LFS giving a better discount to their once a week customers than their once every couple months, and, "I only want your cherries, and three polyps off the side of that rock customers."

The first was at Ocean Reef when he had a fish mispriced

Since I have resolved some problems with my tank around end of last year I started adding to my livestock again. I have been usually going to two of the LFS stores buying items on a weekly basis.

During a visit, one of the LFS mistakenly misquoted the price of a livestock item, but I did not realize it either at the time. At checkout, it was found that the actual price was about $10 more than what was quoted on the $40 item. I expected that he would correct the price and ask if I still wanted it. But without asking, I still received the quoted price and the club discount on the entire sale. ...Something that I did not expect and felt odd accepting it. He could have just charged me the regular price or not given me the club discount on this one item. I would have understood and don't walk into an LFS expecting to buy nice livestock at a steal of a price. This type of customer service tells me how they value your business and want you as their customer. I'm sure that if I went in all the time haggling over prices and demanding discounts they would not want my business and wouldn't treat me as they do now.

There were a good few times I did not receive a discount from the other LFS, but I understand sometimes it's over looked by both of us and depending on what you are buying and what their profit margin is they need to pay the bills and make a decent profit as well. Sometimes it's not worth pointing out. The savings could have been around $10 - $20 when this happens, but me haggling with them or pointing it out every time they forget to apply the discount is not worth losing a good relationship with an LFS. However, if it becomes common practice to spend $100 - $200 on most visits and not at least receive the club discount then I would naturally visit the other LFS much more often.

I think these guys are doing a good job and just because we are in a club we shouldn't expect to get great deals all the time or worry about haggling over a few dollars if your not buying much anyway. They are in business for a reason.

...while typing this it made me look back at my receipt from an LFS purchase yesterday. Hmmm, no discount on $200. LOL

It's me
No seriously Rob has always given me great deals on stuff!!
I just ask how much something is and they say how much it is and I know they are giving me a deal so then I decide can I face the husband with yet another bag in hand or not :D
I wish I could get all the way down there alot more often cause I hear of all the sweet stuff people are getting.
Also because Rob is such a great guy to hang with, Carrie

It seems most of the time when I buy stuff, I forget to ask for a discount. To me the discount is more of an unexpected perk. When I ask for a price, I honestly don't think to figure it out with the discount. I can't tell you how many times I have bought things and been given the discount without even mentioning it. A few stores do come to mind. Like was said before, it's the relationship with a store that gets that kind of service. Sure, I have my two favorite stores. But, in turn they generally say hello and refer to me by name. I like that, and it keeps me thinking of these stores first when I need supplies or just have cash burning a hole in my pocket.

i think if people are worried about pricing and money they picked the wrong hobby to "dive" into

You can not just make a blanketed statement like that with any accuracy!

I was in management and made very good money when I started this "Hobby". I bought a lot of stuff without ever knowing a Club or Club discount existed!

It is not my fault that I was almost killed in November and now have to support my family on what little workman's comp pays me!

Your comment is offensive and uncalled for to those of us that didn't start something we couldn't afford. Some of us have legitimate reasons for saving every dime we can without neglecting our finned friends.

And before you say I should sell my tanks I'll have you know that My entire family enjoys the peaceful environment that watching the tanks provide and I do not intend to deprive them of that.

So freaking what, I didn't get a discount on the pump I bought.....I bought it anyway!

You really should put some thought into what you post. I hope to one day get back to work making very good money again and make all of you proud of what I was able to achieve even if it was a little at a time due to my injury!

well i dont make alot of money at all either. i am an apprentice electrician and a 2nd year and thats not a lot of money at all to support me and my hobbys. i knew going into the hobby that is how it is. i am not "bashing" anyone or saying anyone is a tightwad, but if you go into a situation thinking your going to get a discount and that is all your prepared for then that is where things are wrong. LFS do not have to give anyone any "discount" just cuase i am in this group. being offensive was not my intent stating my opinion was. people should be prepared to pay full price and count any savings or perks they get as a bonus. once agian my blanketed statement doesnt apply to anyone its just me stating what i think. i dont think you or anyone else should be upset cuase i basically said this hobby was expensive, well all know that all to well :)

That statement above, I completely agree with! And that is exactly how I looked at it. I didn't put the pump back on the shelf when I was told there was no discount. I said "Ok" and paid the man.

Same thing at Ocean Reef when he said he couldn't discount the fish because it was already way underpriced by an employee. I knew he was telling the truth because I know about what they sell for......I bought them anyway. And I'm still happy with both purchases.
