Lighting Confusion

Well, i think i have read so much info about lights and options that i'm to the point where it all sounds the same. but nonetheless, i do have some questions for everyone.

my tank is a 29g (30x12x18) and in the future id like to be able to have any lps, sps, softies and anemonies(sp).

ive came to the conclusions that Mh are the way to go and mix them up with either t5's or VHOs.

most of the sysyems i have looked at are either 24" or 36". since my tank is 30" across, would it be better to go bigger or smaller? or does it depend on watts? keep in mind i would like to upgrade to a larger tank within the next year or so.

also, whats the difference between retrofit kits and full hood setups? is it just hat you have to make a hood for the retrofit kits?
