LIRA May 2016 Meeting, 5/6

Hi Everyone,
The Long Island Reef Association next meeting will be this Friday, May 6th, 2016 at the Acan Lighting office.

Speaker: Ret Talbot

Topic: "œWe Are in It Now" "“ A Period of Consequences for the Marine Aquarium Trade & Hobby

Club Website: http://www.longislandreef.org

Additional Information:

Early this year, the first marine aquarium fish was listed under the Endangered Species Act. Last month SeaWorld signed a partnership agreement with a leading anti-aquarium trade activist group. A recent article in National Geographic put the issue of destructive aquarium fishing techniques"”especially cyanide use"”in the spotlight. A bill in the 114th US Congress seeks to list, for the first time, a marine aquarium fish as "œinjurious" under US law and ban all imports of not only the established non-native fish, but of all species in the genus.

The aquarium trade is indeed "œin it now," and the consequences of inaction are wider reaching than many aquarists know. This talk takes an unabashed look at the issues and potential solutions, with an emphasis on how a sustainable marine aquarium trade can be a leading force for reef conservation and socio-economic improvement in developing island nations.

Ret Talbot is an award-winning journalist who covers fisheries at the intersection of science and sustainability. His work has appeared in publications such as Discover Magazine, Mongabay and Ocean Geographic, as well as in hobby media publications such as CORAL Magazine.
