Live Feedings

If feeding a freshwater fish to a mantis can cause liver problems, what about brakish fish? A lot of brakish fish are fairly cheap & do well in salt tanks. Take Molly's for instance. Great fish to cycle a new salt tank with & cheap enough to get 5 to 7 for the same price as 1 damsel. If a brakish fish living in salt water is fed to a mantis, would this decrease the chance of liver damage?

ok.. i have been giving my mantis feeders (fw) for about 3 days now, thats when i got him..

what should i be feeding?

If they are smashers you can feed them freeze dried krill (just soak it for a while), whole uncooked shrimp or other whole shell fish from the grocery store. Try to use stuff that is not cooked or processed. If they are spearers just use frozen silversides.

I feed mine an assortment of stuff.

For live food I feed my smasher hermits, snails, and I just added ghost shrimp (brackish). If I'm feeling rich, I toss in a mithrax.

Coincidentally, the sandbed clams from IPSF are considered a tasty treat.

I feed our peacock (she's 6 inches long) live steamer clams and Pacific mussels from the fish markets. If I don't have any of those I'll thaw krill and she'll eat some, but not much. Once the season opens up here on Puget Sound, I'll be taking out my shrimp pot and sharing some fresh shrimp with her. :)

I have a brakish river on all 4 sides of my town and i get these little fish from there about an inch long and i think they are silverslides, i live in monmouth county, NJ. I am pretty shure guppies are freshwater not brakish so brakish fish could be fine to feed him. I get brakish crabs and shrimp too from the river i think they are ghost shrimp. The problemb is its winter now and i am feeding him guppies and am trying to get to a place where i can buy live little crabs or fish. and i have a 5 inch peacock i'm talking about.

Death, whats up.Just go to any boat dock and grab some shrimp off the pilings.Or take a ride to the hook and grab some rock crabs or hermits during low tide.Mine like the mud snails too and they can be had without even getting yer feet wet.

Oh I forgot my big O scyllarus likes little neck clams(shoprite) and its a trip watching it smash em to bits and clean every bit of meat off the pieces then use the shell bits to add to her "den".

i got that 1 from the animals and things store 4 days ago they had 2 others when i went, 1 real little 1 and 1 with eggs about the size of mine. I think the crabs are still in the mud. last year i usually put some bread in a trap and get tons of little fish perfect size, crabs, shrimp ,great stuff. mabe another couple weeks and i can get more stuff i wasent posting for a long time was bousy back on now though.
Cant get on that other board though i think they changed their website.
